Hey guys, guess what, I just bought COD 2 and my radeon 7500 is causing my computer to lock up after one minute. So I think I need to upgrade. LOL I built a new rig about 6 months ago with a AMD 3200+ 64 bit 939 pin with an ASUS A8V deluxe mobo (AGP) and a gig of Corsair XMS ram. I pulled the video card from my old computer until I could save up some more cash. Well now I have it and need to know what to get. I am thinking about $150 and don't care whether its ATI or NVIDIA.

With a 150 dollar budget I would go with the 6600gt. It will be night and day difference from your current card.

Do you agree that the BFG overclocker is the best brand to go with? How much more is the 6800NU? Are they going to release the 6800GS in AGP?

Also, will the 6600GT allow me to play COD2 with AA on at 1280 with high detail? Thanks

BFG is a good brand, I had a bfg 6800 ultra oc and was very happy with it. I have an xfx now and also very happy with it. Pretty much any reference design card will do you just fine.

As far as 1280x1024 high settings and aa in cod 2 with a 6600gt, I highly doubt that. Not sure I can do that with my 7800gt :)

I thought I read somewhere they may be releasing a 6800gs in agp, would be the way to go if so, great card for 200 bux.

Doubt if the 6800 GS will see AGP. No mention in the write-ups. I have a 6600GT in a shuttle G5 with a 3500+ and I am very impressed with its graphics. Ive played FarCry, HL2 and Serious Sam2 at 1024x768 (it has a 15" Dell ultra and thats all it'll do) and the performance is very, very good. I believe this card was from eVGA. I like BFG and if you can get an OC AGP model for 150 that would be great. You cant go wrong with the 6600 GT. I dont think the 6600 GT will be able to pull really high RES like you have listed. COD2 is tough on high end cards!!! But youll proably see a nice game at 1024x768. The next best thing in AGP would be 6800GT, IMO.

the 6800 and here's why:
its faster and if you can unlock the pipelines, it will own the 6600gt. you can find pretty good deals on ebay for the x850pro ($200) which is faster than both of these cards, but it depends on you.

1280x1024 with 4xaa you can play on DX&7 mode only!!! Anything below 7800gt will not run 1280x1024 on dx9 mod with 4xaa well. I am able to get good fps on 1152x864 with 2xaa dx9

That link doesn't work.
Also, I noticed that the BFG 6800card is only overclocked a little. Is it worth the extra $20 over the XFX6800?

no because you can overclock to the same speeds or faster yourself. wow you just saved $20

BFG is supported by warranty at OC speeds. If you OC the XFX and break it, it's your dime......worth $200 to you. It's up to you. I like BFG service and warranty. :D
sorry about the linky.

I was thinking of going with the eVGA because of the step up program, but I don't think they make a better card than the vanilla 6800 in AGP. Is this correct?

Dang, Im stuck in the same boat..

I have about $200 or so to spend on a new vid card. I have to get an AGP.... my box will be fine for the next few years, so I dont want to upgrade for a PCI-e card... with that said...

I've been debating on what to get.. The BFG 6600, or the BFG 6800, or the evga 6800.. I just can't decide...

The deal on zipzoomfly really pushed me more towards the evga 6800... Plus some of your reasoning behind it, and some of the user reviews on the card.. Any thoughts, or ideas on this.. I think a lot of ppl are in the same place as me.. just can't decide on which card to get from what manafacture..

Im going to be playing battlefield 2, HL2, Fear and other games...

thanks

6800 GT and 6800 Ultra. If you won't have the money in the next 3 months don't bother considering the step-up program. But EVGA is a great company none the less.

eVGA's website shows no 6800gt in AGP and I can't find it in stock on anyone's web site. Did they stop making it? How do I contact them with no serial number to get tehir phone number?

I am thinking I will go with the eVGA and cross my fingers that eVGA will make a 6800gs agp within 90 days.

P.S. I am tempted to wait until this friday and see what deals are out their.

I also had ~$200 to spend for a video card to upgrade my older AGP system. Unforunately the market is really bare at this price point. I saw the x800pro for $205 shipped last week at clubit, buts its out of stock now. I ended up buying a used x800xt for $210.

At the $150 mark I suggest the 6600gt. Couple weeks ago when you could pick up a 6800 for ~$150-160 I would have said go for it, but now that they are selling for more than $180 I don't. You can grab a 6600gt for ~$120 AR and its nearly as fast as the 6800. With a $60+ difference, the only reason to get the 6800 would be to try and mod them, but lots of 6800 don't mod so it a big gamble. I had 3 friends with 6800. Only 1 of the 3 6800s fully moded successfully. The other 2 6800s only unlocked the 1 extra vertex shader which really makes no difference.

My vote goes for the 6600gt
eVGA 6600gt Retail = $139 shipped - $20 rebate (until 12/30).

I suppose you could consider the market "bare" that this price point if you ignore purchasing a used card off the forums; 6800gts are available for only slightly more, and that gs should be right around 200. you could also pick up a connect3d gto if you're willing to go for the unlocking... and don't ignore the standard 6800; it WILL perform significantly better than a 6600gt because of its extra pipes and 256bit memory interface.

NOT TRUE FOR AGP.

oops; forgot the gto was pci-e :(

btw flick through here if you want to see the performance diff between the 6800 and 6600gt...watch as the res+aa increases.

I got the bfg 6800 OC for $150 with 2 day shipping right here on this forum...should be here tommorrow. Just through i'd throw my 2 cents in on what you could find if you looked around for a good trader.

If I got the GPU with the free MOBO as mentioned above. Would my ram (corsair DDR400 pc3200 XMS 512x2) be compatible?

I called eVGA and the customer support said that they will be making the 6800gs in agp, but he had no time frame. I really wish he would of said no so I could just make up my mind and go over to PCIe. Now I might get the eVGA 6800 and hope that they release the 6800gs within 90 days so I can trade up to it.

The inquirer says two to three weeks for 6800gs AGP and the article date was Nov.17 but no way to know how accurate that is.

I just ordered the evGA 6800 from tiger direct. This is about the best Nvidia video card I can get on AGP, if they release anything better (6800gs) in the next 90 days I will be upgrading.

One question, when you upgrade what price do you pay for the new card? The price on eVGA's website?

upgrades in the step up program go through eVGA. Youll pay their price. Remember to register your card via eVGAs web site to qualify for the program. Good choice. :D

That's a good card, I have one. YMMV. You might even cancel that order and hit up the classifieds. I saw a 6800gt AGP in there yesterday for $200 shipped, IIRC. Used is better for AGP in my experience, especially at this point in the game.

EDIT: The card I saw is on page 8, but the last post was today... probably still for sell. I have my threads to show at max, so look for it. I'd link you, but I don't think that's allowed...

I dont get the upgrade program, could you explain it for me. My next vcard purchase will probably be eVGa because I like the premise behind it and their warranty is effin' sweet.

How much do you pay for the new card, you get a discount on it right? You send them your old card correct, they give you a dollar value for the old card or what? Confused about it.
