I have two 27" 1080p ASUS monitors right now. One is centered on my desk and is the 144Hz VG278HE, the other one is off to the right and is a VK278Q.

The colors/brightness on the monitors don't match exactly. They were bought about 5 years apart, so the VG278HE looks slightly better, but I only notice because I have them side by side. My roommate just ordered a whole new PC and I offered to sell him the VK278Q so I can buy something that matches the color better to the other one. Now I'm thinking of selling both however and upgrading to 1440p and IPS.

I've been looking at the ASUS MG279Q which I can get easily if I sell both my monitors. Down the line though when I want a second or third auxiliary monitor It's going to be a bit prohibitively expensive to pick up two more of them, and I don't want to do any triple monitor gaming or anything. I just want a display of similar resolution and panel type so that I can be productive at my workstation when I'm not playing games.

How much do I need to worry about colors not matching up exactly across two different IPS panels? Are there any fairly priced monitors I could pair with the MG279Q?

By the way I mentioned the MG279Q, but I'm ready to wait for other monitors to get released also, I just obviously won't be buying 3 of them so I still have the concern of colors matching up.

Also I should mention I'm not doing any sort of color sensitive work like photo or video editing, I just don't want a random assortment of monitors.
 
None of the consumer grade monitors are factory calibrated, if you want monitors to match you will have to calibrate them, on top of that, colors will drift over time. :)
 
But in theory can two consumer grade IPS monitors be calibrated to look identical, or will there always be a mismatch? I'm just trying to avoid a situation where I'd have to buy two or three MG279Qs because of the cost.
 
I would guess, as long as the mismatch between led's or light filtering in both panels isn't too big and the native color temperatures and gamuts are similar, there shouldn't be a problem.

I used Eye One to calibrate my monitors at work (2 different dell models one new one several years old) and they went from annoyingly different to good enough. Note they're TN monitors, so being off axis on the one made it's colors drive a little.
