Need upgrade advice

Well it seems I have really fell behind in the gaming community lately. Funny how starting a family will do that to ya ;) So, yesterday I received the COD: Ghosts game and after installing, updating, and patching I received a nice DirectX error when attempting to start the game. It didn't take long to figure out the error was generated by insufficient hardware. As it turns out my video cards are waaaay overdue for replacement. I swear it seems like just yesterday that I spent a ton of money on getting a nice SLI setup  My current system specs are below and let me say that my first requirement is price. This is an unexpected expense so I'm looking for the best bang for the buck. Second is I'd like to go to a single card instead of SLI or crossfire if I can find one that is better/cheaper than getting two of a lesser model for more net gain in the end. I don't really have any sort of preference of AMD vs Nvidia or anything like that.

Intel I7 920 at stock speeds
12gb of ram
Nvidia GTX 275 x2 SLI
Motherboard has two x16 PCIe slots
PSU is either a 750 or 850 (can't recall) but its a nicer one so I'm not concerned really about power requirements for a good value-priced card(s).

Well [H]brethren - let me know what you think I should get.

I'd say GTX-760 is a good card to get. That or go used on the FS/FT forum. I've seen used GTX-670's for a good price if you don't mind getting used.

I will check out the FS forum but I definitely would prefer new to used. In the event of a lemon I would like a warranty to fall back on. The 760 seems a little spendy. Is this the new normal price range on cards these days; $270?

r9 270x or the 7870ghz edition are good cards (even though the prices are still inflated atm). gtx 670 + is a good deal on nvidia side. I would be wary buying used Amd because of being possible miners.

I agree that an upgrade would be nice, but that setup should still be able to run the game without errors. Are you set on the upgrade path, or what else have you tried in order to fix the issue? First step would be a clean install of nVidia drivers, and making sure your DirectX runtime is up to date.

@257Tony - I haven't tried all that much to be honest. I am relying on what the game and published minimum requirements are telling me. I did double check it over at systemrequirementslab.com and they definitely reported back that my vid cards were missing a few features that COD: Ghosts requires and ultimate failed to meet minimum specs for the game as a result. I can certainly try new drivers but Nvidia really stopped making fixes in them for my series of cards a while ago. The game installation itself installs directx so that one should be fine. Computer stays up to date for the most part and is maintained pretty well.

Looks like the developer has set a dx11 only requirement on that game, not sure why as it's just a console port. Bang for the buck is hard to come by right now, but even something like a 7850 or gtx 660 would be a good upgrade for you, and run much cooler and quieter.

Just to give you a heads up, if you're looking for multiplayer with this game its pretty much a ghost town. if it were me i'd just eat the cost of the game and not upgrade if you're only upgrading for this game.

No pun intended? :D Does the other COD game (BO2? - I forget) have the DX11-only requirement? If not, OP - you may just want to pick that up instead and just play Ghosts later on down the road.

Yeah everything else that I have played up to this this point(mass effect series, all COD's, all battlefields except the latest one, and world of tanks/warplanes) works just fine albeit a little sluggish on certain settings obviously.

Honestly since it was a gift I have no cost to me rolled up into this game but I hate to just have it sitting there unable to play it. It did wake me up and make me realize how old my current vid cards are though and make me think about upgrading a little to help this system get a little further down the road before total replacement is needed at some point.

You could likely sell both yof our cards on the forums and get around $100 towards your budget after shipping.

That's what I was going to suggest next. Figure out a budget before the sale of the existing cards, then have an extra boost in buying power once they sell.

Thanks for the suggestions all. So far it sounds like most cards that being suggested here are between the $185 to $200 mark. I do need to find out what kind of budget I'm dealing with and then get back into this thread to narrow it down a bit more. This does at least give me an idea of what I'd be looking at for a current generation single card solution for my system.

OT but I've just got back into PC gaming and playing COD:Ghosts I noticed that at any one time there are somewhere between 4,000-11,000 players online. I think around 11,000 is the highest I've seen in the past couple of weeks.

Is it just me or is that figure ridiculously low? I suspect there would be more players on one of the console services.

I would go with like a gtx 680 or a 6970 or something. Used should be under or around 150.

I might buy one of your video cards....lol....I need one for a budget build Im working on.

Don't you mean gtx 580? A 680 goes for around $250 used and is a much better card than a 6970.
