My family is going to HD TV soon with either Dish network or DirecTV. I want a TV tuner card for my computer that will work with Dish / DirecTV stb's that will provide a good quality picture. Currently I am running a WinTV PVR 150 from Hauppauge and the picture it gives me from my directv reciever to my dell 30" 3007 is rather terrible (is this just because I'm running at 2560x1600 and its a SD signal?).

I am currently looking at either the WinTV HVR 1850 or 2250 (for future proofing if I want a second tuner) but I more than welcome other suggestions from those in the know as I really don't have much idea what I should be getting atm. Either way I believe I will need to get the MCE packages that provide a remote/ir blaster to control the channel changing from my STB?

Basically I am looking for a TV tuner card that will work well with Dish or DirecTV stb's and give me a good HD picture to my dell 3007, thanks for any help you guys can provide me.

Maybe the AMD ATI Tuner Card that uses a CableCard, does dish network uses cable cards??? If so, theres your answer. Its what im doing as soon as UPS delivers my tuner card...

Dish and DirecTV don't use cablcard tech. Only the cable companies, hence the name.

Swarley, you can't just hook up the dish signal to a tuner card and watch TV. You need a box for that just like a TV does.

If you want standard def then the cards you are looking at are fine. If you want HD the only option is a Hauppauge HD-PVR (and DVB Link to whack it up with WMC).

Are you sure? I watched the DirecTV guy install some credit card looking thing into my receiver.

Its not a cable card, its a different authorization token that only the satellite folks use. And i think its different between dish & directv.

They were working on a computer satellite tuner for media center, as it was in testing at microsoft labs, but it was cancelled a while ago.

Your only solution was already mentioned and that is: to get a hauppauge hd-pvr which supports component HD input from a HD satellite box(or any other HD component source).

Its not a tuner, it only accepts analog video inputs - and is the only affordable one i've heard of that handles component HD signals.
