I need to upgrade my PC here...it's starting to get slow for video editing...here's my current spec sheet:

Athlon XP 2700+ 2.1 Ghz/333 FSB
1 GB PC 2700 Ram
80 GB HDD
ATi 9800 Pro AIW
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
450 Watt PSU


I'm looking to upgrade only the CPU, Motherboard, Case, and HSF for the processor.

I'm leaning towards Intel, but could use your guy's help! Thanks!

P.S. Budget would probably be $350-$400
 
Before jumping to upgrade mobo and cpu, your ram might be the problem.... If you're doing video editing, and stuff like that ram can help ALOT
 
I very very seldom will say this, but yeah, you might want a new intel mobo/processor. I'm a huge amd fan(boy) but if you are doing solely video editing a ~3.0ghz northwood might be a good choice.

However, if you also game you definitely are going to want an athlon 64 system. For 400$ I would get:

athlon 64 3000+ s939 - 151

Gigabyte nforce3 mobo - 85

and that pc 2700 RAM is really going to hold you back, so I would get1 gb 512x2 corsair value select - 140

You will get a very noticeable performance increase over your current system with this. If you are doing gaming I would definitely go the amd route. Intel makes sense to me only if you are soley doing video editing and even then I would stay away from the prescott based systems. I'll leave the intel spec to someone who knows more about them.
 
Well, I do equal parts of both, so I'm thinking Intel may be the way for me to go...

Anybody know of any cool cases out there?
 
Your computer looks fine...Maybe a faster HD, or a larger HD.....P4 and A64 are great for videoediting..But there is nothing wrong with editing on a barton core....

Well, I've been wanting to upgrade this thing anyway...it's not just video editing, its the gaming side of things, too

But mostly video editing, so that's why I've decided to go Intel
 
eh, it's starting to look like I should probably justy save my money and build a complete system for $1,500-$2,000
 
You may be happier doing that, as waiting a few months will let the current technologies mature a bit, and pci express come down in price. An affordable SLI setup may even be possible. I may be dreaming, but with a Dothan... that would be nice.
