I currently have a Rosewill 550w power supply and am wondering if 550w is enough to power an e8400, Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard, 2 optical drives, 140gb raptor, 640gb wd caviar, 8gigs of ram and an HD4850.

If 550w is not enough, what do I need? I've been out of the loop for a while and would just like to be sure.

i'd say your safe, but marginally safe would be better with a Corsair 750tx

550W should be plenty, although I am not sure how good Rosewill is in terms of PSUs.

Which 550W Rosewill PSU do you have? There's like seven different Rosewill 550W PSUs out there.

A good quality 550W PSU would be enough for that system. But since Rosewill is well known for cheaping out on their PSUs, I recommend getting a better quality 550W PSU instead like this PSU:
BFG Tech LS-550 550W PSU - $75

Rosewill doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to being able to output full, stable power from their supplies. With your setup a quality 550w should be able to handle the load although you don't mention if you're planning to do overclocking or lots of gaming.

The Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750w power supply would be overkill unless you're planning on jumping to a quad core and doubling up on video cards... even then it'd probably be a bit much. Not that that's a bad thing in my opinion :D

NewEgg is running a nice deal on a Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650w power supply. At $99 with free shipping (a quoted but slightly overinflated $60 discount) the current price is smack dab in the middle of other quality 550-600w power supplies plus you get an extra 50-100w as a bonus. I'm currently running a CMPSU-750TX in my rig but in all honesty only bought it because it was only $10 more than the CMPSU-650 when I was building and I couldn't pass it up.

However, if you're not planning on running everything all at once and you're not overclocking the Rosewill may pull through... I just shudder at the thought of trying to troubleshoot a power supply problem in the middle of putting together a completely new system.

Also this will be used primarily as a gaming rig and I do plan on overclocking

Then definitely get a new PSU like the BFG I recommended or the Corsairs recommended.

Just an FYI, that Rosewill would be decent enough for an office-type build since it's ATNG built. Though not good enough for an overclocked gaming system.

thanks for all of the quick replies everyone. I just pulled the trigger on the CMPSU-650TX. great deal after rebate!
