How do I set up a VPN so that I can access my files and folders and servers and computers and network remotely?

I was looking at different VPN routers and one came to mind:

Netgear FVS318 Router
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122007

Or, should I do something like WRT54GL and use DD-WRT? Does that even support VPNs?

Once I have it connected to a static WAN IP, what do I do? Software for client machine? If so, does Netgear provide it?

This is my 1st VPN setup (good thing it's not for production, but rather for testing purposes and to see if I can do it (which I'm sure I can, with a little help from you guys) and to learn more and more about networking).

Thanks!

I would also look at the open source linux firewall suites. Most of them have support for OpenVPN, as well IPSec and PPTP. Endian makes setting up an openvpn server quite easy.

I would look into a linux firewall, probably your best bet.

IPCop and Smoothwall both are easy to get setup, and have guides on installing OpenVPN and other VPN solutions. Dont be scared by linux, I really have no knowledge in it and even I could figure out how to install mods and such following guides (it is very easy).

if its just for learning mess around with DD-WRT, it has OpenVPN.
