I would like to remove the secondary HD WD 120GB from a PC. The primary C drive is also a 120GB WD and is all that is needed.

Can I simply shut the power down and unplug the atx power connector and the ribbon cable from the Secondary F: drive and then just re-boot the PC ?

Or is the existing ribbon cable used in this rig specifically designed for two HD`s and I will have to get a different ribbon cable for just using the single primary HD as desired?

Intel P4 2.4 GHZ

Thanks for any replys.

I found out the IDE cable the pc has will work just fine with only one Primary drive and the pc is designed to work with CS [Cable select] .

At present the primary is pinned for the master and the secondary drive the slave.

So is all I have to do is power down, unplug the secondary ide cable connector, & the atx power plug from the secondary drive and then just reboot the pc?

Regards

I never used cable select, I always jumpered my drives. If you are going to only run one drive, you would remove the other drive, and IIRC, the drive with the OS would not have a jumper on it as this would be master and single drive. It should be printed on the drive on how it is to be jumpered.

If you have two drives, why not keep both in there just in case you do need the storage?

Yes, power completely off, unplug ribbon and power connector and reboot.

Same if you were using cable select, I always use cable select jumpers, that way I can change between master and slave on my drives, by just changing the ribbon instead of the pain in the ass jumpers

protias, if I have a secondary drive dedicated to backup critical files, then I always keep it disconnected in the event of a catastrophy such as psu failure taking out everything, power surges taking out everything etc. Not that difficult to plug in or unplug the ribbon and power connector. That and backing up to an external drive just in case.
