Hey fellas I get my 8800GTs today and I don't get my CPU till Friday (last piece on a new build), so I was thinking about taking a Pentium 4 650 I have, throwing it in, making sure everything runs correctly etc, then on Friday swapping out the CPU (E6750).

My question is, is this an easy, painless process? Will I just be able to take one out and throw the other in and my mobo (EVGA 680i A1) will know how to configure it etc? Or should I just wait it out?

Thanks fellas!

should be no problem. drop in replacement... no changes, both are Intel "SMP" chips. (hyperthreaded 650 & dual core 2)

I'm not sure this Pentium 4 650 is a dual core it dosen't say that anywhere on it and I turned on CPUz and I didn't see anything there either, but it guess it dosen't matter really right.

My experience is that you only need to reinstall if you change motherboards, make a drastic change to Northbridge or HDD controller.

Now... you may cause the OS to want to reactivate... but I don't think so. So many overclockers and system tweakers change CPU paremeters I doubt activation is tied to it. I think it's more closely tied to the mobo.

I don't think it's necessary.Though it might be good to install drivers for the new CPU after you boot up.

Just upgraded my E4300 to a Q6600. No need to reinstall. (but I eventually did anyway, there is nothing like a clean install. :) )

If you are going from a single to dual core CPU you need to reinstall windows to allow the other kernal to be installed. From dual to quad you dont need to.

When I installed my Q9450 I had to reactivate my 32bit Vista. Luckily it reactivated without having to phone Microsoft. My 64bit didn't have any problems.

its not a true dual core, but it has hyperthreading which the OS sees as a dual core processor and will install the SMP (multithreaded) kernel.
