i just bought an ATI 9600pro off of a guy locally. only thing is, he installed a crystal orb onto it(or so i've been told thats what it is) and its pretty loud. what decent, quieter fan/heatsink could i get for this?

thanks, i can put a computer together but after that i have no idea what i'm doing :) and video cards i have even less of a clue

Hrm, the Vantec Iceberq (original, not 4) runs at 5000 RPM versus newer ones (4) running at 6000 or so. I don't see mention of noise levels in this stuff though. I think it isn't from what I've read, but I can't say for sure not having used one. Heck, the Iceberq might actually be quiet as well for all I'm sure of just yet.

Anyway, before you do that, for the love of god spray out all that dust! d-: Seriously though, I can see from that picture the GPU HSF has gathered rather a lot.

EDIT: Hehe, or, if you wish, I can sell you my factory HSF when I buy a new one d-: I presume it's not noisy, though I admit it would have to be pretty loud for me to hear it in this noisy PC.

I'd say wait a few weeks and get the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer that's coming out for the 9600 boards.

I'm thinking about picking up the original for my 9500, too.

how much is that going to cost when it comes out?

and this fan is moving at 6400-6700rpm according to my asus board manager.

any other options like the zalman heatpipe?(although its kinda out of my price range). i'm not even sure on the workings of a heat pipe besides not having a fan

that would be the vantec iceberg original you were talking about?

I'm assuming you've got that plugged into a motherboard header... Maybe you could use Speedfan to slow it down.

If its plugged directly into your psu you could always build a seven volt header and try running it that way.

But as always, watch your temps, you don't want to fry it.

The best bet is probably going to be the VGA Silencer or maybe a Thermaltake or Zalman heat pipe cooler.

how do i find my video card temps and also how would i overclock it if i felt like it? i'll check out that speedfan program. and ya, the fan is plugged into the mobo

That link does seem to lead to the same thing, yes. I haven't tested it myself mind you.

Anyway, I guess the reason that thing is so loud is because it's running faster than it really should be. I wonder if it's temperature controlled.

Oh, and I got really curious when I saw that heatpipe thing. It seems like it's actually not as good of a cooler as it seems according to the reviews I saw. Could be worse mind you, but there are other disadvantages such as the fact that it's so heavy you have to be careful with your video card.

I don't know if it will help, but you can try taking off the Thermaltake fan grill for less vibration and better air flow.

Do you have an old stock CPU heatsink/fan lying around? Those are usually pretty quiet

Unfortunatly I'm in the same boat... Trying to get my 9800 to quiet down a bit...

The best way I've come up with to check the temps is the classic touch test. If it hurts to touch it, it's probably too hot... I'm also using W1zzard's ATItool to check for artifacts.

I recently did a 7-volt mod on my stock cooler, (Yeah I know, living dangerously...) and lost about 5-10mhz on my max core overclock before it starts artifacting, but I'm willing to run it at stock. It's not that big of a deal.

Now to figure out what to do about my northbridge fan... :p

If you don't plan on OCing a whole lot you could get the Thermaltake Giant II or the Zalman Heatpipe cooler, I think if you stick a fan on em they are actually pretty decent for OCing too.
