My dad has an external hard drive which he almost knocked over the other night. I got a call this morning asking me to put the hd into the computer. My question is what steps would i need to take or is it as simple as installing it inside and turning back on the power?

yes.. usually they're just normal drives with an enclosure and a circuit board. you can just plug them in and windows should recognize it.

thanx I will give it a try when I see them again. Do i need to adjust any of the jumpers before installation? I believe the external is currently set on slave or cable select

depends. If you're hooking it up with another drive on the same cable, then you'll probably want this new one to be slave. if its by itself, then it may not matter as much. I'd probably set it as master though, personally.

If you don't want to void the warantee on the external disk, you could also velcro the drive (enclosure and all) to the floor of the case and run the USB cable out through a vacant PCI slot.

This might not be a bad idea, that way your not wasting the extra cash you spent for the drive to be external-able.
