Need to image my hard drive

So i have a 320 gig hd in my laptop. I want to buy a 500 gig and I don't have the cd for windows 7 or the key. My friend installed it for me. He has a legit hook up. So i figure best course of action is to image my hard drive and copy it on to my new hard drive. Or find a key viewer for windows 7 and re install it.

Whats the easiest way to make a image of a hard drive to copy onto another drive?

windows has a PE (ERD emergency repair disk). you can create it from scratch within windows

use windows 'Backup and Restore' to create an image of your boot drive
'Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore'

when you have the new HD, boot the ERD cd/dvd, and restore the image you created onto your new HD.
