Hey there...I just found out that my sister and bro-in-law are not taking my advice by not having me build them their own PC...they want to go out and buy one when they know nothing about them...they even called me tonight to ask 2 questions...I thought to myself that they should not be buying something they doin't know anything about...

SO...I am going to build them 3 PC's...one entry level, 1 Mid level, and 1 kikass system...by build I mean picking out the parts and putting them in Excel and organizing it for them to look at...

I am now looking for a CPU and I know that there are good and bad CPU's...maybe not BAD, just not advisable for some reason...so I wanted to check with you guys to see if this is a goog one...I am at entry level right now...THANX

EDIT: I have noticed that the first CPU has an A on it...as if it were a version A...is this good or bad...what is up with the versions anyways??? Does it have anything to do with the FSB or something???

why not go amd, cheaper + faster then that chip.

you could get them an amd 2500+ and an nforce 2 (probably way overkill for what they need) for about 140ish (chip is about 82 i tihnk board is like 60ish shuttle an35ultra 400) would smoke that p4 2 gig.

THIS is why I don't go AMD...I am not familiar with AMD...haven't built me one yet...I want to tho...I gotta learn more aabout it before I go build one...I don't wanna buy something I don't know much knowledge about...I'man Intel person anyways...I don't OC (yet) andthis computer is gonna be for my sister kids...they don't need a super fast PC...just a reg one

i dont really want to read that thread.

The only way you are going to learn is if you read about it. It's not hard at all. you really should try it, its the same as building a p4 minus how the processor heatsink goes onto the chip. it's not brain surgery man.

if you cant tell the speed ratings....go find a site that compares the speeds...

like this very site...or anandtech...hell google it up!

So are you ppl just not gonna answer y question??? Maybe I should have posted this in the Intel sectionI do not have any experiance with AMD's yet...I would also have to learn about AMD mobo's too...don't have time to do all that...

If you ppl are so paranoid and absolutely WANT me to go AMD then this is the only combo I know of that would qualify as entry level:

AMD Athlon 2000+
Asus A7V333-X

How's that???

Why are you ppl so against Intel...can't you just answer my question(s)...I don't particularly want to go AMD because I am not experianced enuff to buy an AMD CPU and mobo for someone else yet...you wouldn't go out and buy a truck made by an unknown manuf. when the only thing you know about it is by what other ppl tell you...would you??? Just plz answer my question(s) and and that should be helpful enuff...not trying to be mean or anything...THANX
C'YA ?:-D

dont get a pentium 4 A processor. for an extra like $60 u can get a 2.4C with twice the fsb and hyperthreading......

That sucks. ;) and No it does not "qualify" for entry level.

Because for a "budget" system you could do better. Simply said Intel is only good for OCing and "braggin' rights." You said you want to get experience with AMD? So why not now? How is AMD so different then Intel? If you need reviews we can give you some, If you need support answers we can show you where to get them and we can answer them too. The combination I outlined would be REALLY good (ask around). But to answer your question: I guess it would be good, a 2.4C would be better though, just buy a BETTER intel board (springdale) so you can upgrade later to a much better processor.

This is for the entry level correct? What is the budget? And what are the parts included in this budget? The whole nine yards, or just the barebones stuff? Let me know and I am sure I can pull some stuff out. All retail right, not 2nd hand?

here, ill sell you a AMD 1600+ and a MSI kt3 ultra 2r for $200 + shipping. ill even throw in a 52 speed burner :) . it can be oced to 2200+ on stock voltages too!

ps. ill throw in 512 mbs of ddr ram as well for uyour trouble.

Entry...I have a budget yet at the same time I don't...I am trying to put together a pc that costs less than $1000...but I don't have a specific budget on specific items...any price on the cpu will do as long as it has 2.0Ghz - 2.53Ghz, Pentium4, reliable, and qualifies as entry level...I will pricewatch for the cost of the cpu

I have picked out 512MB PC3200 memory...and a Gigabyte GA-8IG1000 Pro...that's around $220 including a case and PSU...I haven't picked out the rest of the stuff yet

My advice is never push to anyone to have you build them a system. Be nice and offer it, but if they chose to not take you up, then that's their problem. If you continue to push it, and they let you build them for it, you will end up being their 24/7 tech support, which usually causes them to blame anything and everything on you when something happens such as if they d/l a virus, it'll some how end up being "your" fault and you'll have to fix it because they don't know better. If they want to go buy a pre-built computer, let them and point them in a good direction. I know it's hard b/c you just want to help them out and make sure they get their money's worth from a system, but in the end, it'll most likely be a huge dilema on your part.

(this is just speculation from thing's i've seen happen to a lot of people, i could be totally wrong in your case since i don't know you or your family, but just some advice and something to think about. Good luck w/ everything:D)

I am their 24/7 tech support anyways...I don't mind it...I actually enjoy it cause I learn new solutions to new problems and it can educate me...also if theres something that I can't figure out then I can come here and ask and I can learn new stuff that way...I just love computers

They won't think it's my fault and blame stuff on me...this is my sister for goodness sakes...my whole family gets along perfectly...if something doesn't work I tell them what it is and how I can fix it...if something has to be replaced then she'll tell me how much and I research a price and I get it and install it for her...I only live about 25 min away...and I also get to steal some food from the fridge and pantry to eat...LOL...and if it's close enuff to eating time then they might fix me something to eat too just for working on their PC...I don't get paid for working on it BTW...but I might charge them a fee for me to build it and install everything...

Very true. This has happened to me when I first started building, and I regreted it ever since. If they aren't ethusiastic, they probably should not have an enthusiast's computer.

The fact that I can get BUILD them a faster PC for LESS money should get their attention...I don't think they believe it tho...that's why I am drawing up a complete PC in Excel so I can show them what I could build them

Sometimes when I'm drawing up a system build, I forget what all there is to buy. In that case, I surf over to pricewatch.com and they have a good list of what you need in a system, and where to get stuff on the cheap. Just be sure to check the reseller's ratings before buying from 'em - pricegrabber.com is good in that regard because they give the ratings of the merchants offering the product.

-SEAL

Yes...I know about those websites...RR's website also has a "pricewatch" feature...I have found some things that didn't come up on pricewatch/grabber at a lower cost...

I say that you go with this board Abit IS7-E instead of the one you picked out.

Do get the 2.4B Intel P4. Using Newegg's price, you are looking at only $225 for Mobo and CPU.

As for Ram, go with a name brand 512MB PC3200. They can be had for about $85 bucks or so.
Mushkin
or
Crucial

That totals up at about $310 for CPU/Mobo/Ram

As for Video Card. Since it is Entry Level, go with a 9600 Pro at least ($150).

Sound card - Audigy2 ZS for $90 bucks or get a lower model, depending on your budget

Hard Drive - Stick with ATA 100, get the most bang for your buck. Spend about $100 on this. Western Digital, Hitachi, and Seagate are pretty reliable.

For Optical Drive, get a Lite On Combo Drive 48x24x48x16x $50.

That is a total of roughly $700 bucks for everything I have listed. Good luck.

Thanx...I will consider using that modo and CPU

I've already picked out the RAM...CHECK IT OUT

I had thought that I was going to go nVidia with an entry level PC...something like a geForce4 MX 440 64MB DDR...I think I can get that for around $50

Oh crap...I can't get them an Audigy2....I don't even have one yet...I was gonna get the Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro for myself and sell them my Audigy Platinum

I have seen some very good deals on HDD's lately...this will be one of the last things I decide so I can check on the deals going around

I have picked out an Artec 52X/24X/52 CD-RW (Silver)...I can get it for $37.00...very good deal I believe...I still have to look at some reviews for Artec brand CD-RW's but they shouldn't be doing much burning anyways...it's for their kids...I'll check on the reviews and that will make my final decision if I will stick with Artec or go for another brand...plus it's silver to match the case

Right now if I go with MY decisions (which includes a case, PSU, CPU, memory, mobo, cd-rw, dvd-rom, and floppy) it all comes to $452.40...but I still have to consider the mobo you picked out and the Artec cd-rw and dvd-rom...

I still have to decide on a vid/sound card, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and monitor...I hope they are still satisfied with their current monitor...including a monitor SUX when trying to build a budget system...I think I can get one for ~$130 tho...that's not too bad...OH YEAH...they need a printer too...they better not make me network the PC to their other PC...that'll sux cause their on 2 different floors...I might have to get someone else I know to do that

I'll post up my decisions tomorrow after I have picked everything out and reviewed over them...thanx for ur help...THANX
C'YA ?:-D

P.S.: Oh crap...I got distracted and forgot to finish my test I gotta hand in on Monday...it's 3:38AM and I gotta wake up at 8:30AM and I am still not done with my homework...grrrr....LOL

WORD.. thats my setup :) cept I'm a 2600+

the price for 2500+'s just went down to 80 bucks at newegg.com. I just ordered one tonight! the 2500+ and the A7N8X deluxe is the way to go.

NF7-s and dfi infinity are better overclockers than the asus.

If you don't intend to overclock (much) it doesn't matter.

o_O you know, for under 1k you could build an extremely healthy athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+ system.

If your interested in system configs, ill look some up and post all the links, but =x yuck lol xp2000+ or p4 2.4.

Since your building it for your sister im going to assume you want a high performing inexpensive system WITHOUT overclocking, that way you get maximum stability. You never answered if you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse and all the other extra's with the system also.

Recommendation #1
Barton 2500+ amd cpu
DFI lanparty 2 or abit NF7-S
512 (2x256) pc3200 ram (brand doesnt really matter that much, just make sure the chips are matched pairs.)
80-120gig SATA drive (reasonably priced from what ive seen lately)
video card = total entry level : Radeon 9200 (not the se model)
= Mid lvl ; Radeon 9600XT (~150.00)
= Best deal(imho) : radeon 9800pro (newegg.com 215.00)
case : look around and pick out something you like with a decent power supply (350w or > )
CDrw/dvd combo = about 50 bucks on most websites.

System #2
Athlon 64 3200+
MSI-k8t neo
1x 512mb pc3200 (good brand plz ;) )
80-120gig (whatever you think is large enough)
radeon 9800 pro(215.00 @ newegg.com)
cdrw/dvd
case w/ good power supply (400w or > )
anything else needed

System #3(Intel based) Dont laugh plz ;)

www.dell.com go to small business section, order up a
Dell 400sc server, go to customize, do the 99.00 upgrade to a p4 2.8c, the 50% off for the hard drive upgrade to an 80 gig, have them deliver it, send back your rebate forms. Be done with dell For around $400.00 after rebate
pull out the 128mb ram, sell it on ebay or in forsale/trade forums for 25.00-30.00,
order a radeon 9800pro and 2x256 pc3200 ECC ram kit from kingston (though you dont need the ecc, its just recommended)
and be done with it.

:edit: oh almost forgot, comes with a 48x cd-rom, so might want to get a cd-rw (30-50.00 on pricewatch or newegg or where ever you want to get one)
