Well, after 3 weeks, it really seems like curing the artic silver had absolutely NO effect on temperatures. I sent the CPU on 2 instances of prime 95, shut it off for about 8 hours, worked on the PC, and then did it all over again for about 2 weeks straight. No effect at all.

The only thing that's been keeping it low has been amd's cool and quiet. Under load today, on a slightly warmer than usual spring day, I noticed under 50% load, my 4200 amd x2's temps show up to 63c. From what I've been reading, the X2 can only operate under temperatures of 65 degrees safely. So of course, I paniced. The thing isn't over clocked or anything, but I am trying to cram the whole cpu setup into a very tiny old Antec Lanboy, and the new PSU has turned int o a large chunk of wiring in teh case. The case temps have been able to maintain a 30-31 temperature even today, the motherboard usually hovers at 41-42c, give or take a few degrees.

Now, heres the problem ,with the giant wires, I don't have a huge amount of space for cooling to work with. I'm also broke right now, and the canadian dollar just kinda sucks. So, either it's buy a new case and hope it helps the airflow, or buy a nice new cpu cooler. My problem is the cooler has gotta fit, so nothing insanely wide like that f4t4l1ty cooler crap, tall is ok. If I can survive at and over 65c for 5 months of the year, I can handle that... but I'm pretty sure I've gotta address this issue soon.

Just an update. I took the case lid off, it says it's running at 23, but the cpu is warm to the touch, like 44c warm. So I'm not particularily trusting the probe right now. I ran a double prime95 on it with the case off, I dinged 64 according to the thing in less than 20 minutes. I didnt' let it go any further in fear of permanent damage. I think I'm going to get a new heatsink for this tommorow, the arctic 64 pro.

My case is the old antec lanboys, the original ones. It's about 8 x 16 x 16 in size with 2 80mm fans, one front one back. I'm kinda starting to get the impression the case is holding in alot of heat... but I really can't afford a new case with better airflow AND a new a new heatsink, which the latter has proved to be immedietly required to survive the summer temperatures.

I'm unfamiliar with your case, there are some things you can do to improve air flow that cost nothing:
- Remove both front and back case fan grills.
- Check the front case bezel for restricted air intake.
- Use low-restriction air filter media.

The photos of the newer Lanboy case (120mm fans) show restrictive case fan grills.

For aluminum, a diagonal-cutting plier will quickly take out restrictive case fan grills.

Case front bezels are usually designed for looks, not for optimal air flow.

Best filter media I've found is pleated furnace air filter media - unmeasurable flow restriction and excellent dust-trapping. Buy it at Home Depot, etc., and cut-to-fit.

Are you sure your temp-monitoring is accurate? You can buy DVMs with thermal probes for $30 or less.

Hope this helps!

I'm sure it's accurate with the case closed, I'm just doubting the fan probes accuracy with the case off. Right now, it's giving me 15 c, but the CPU is DEFINATELY running hotter than 15c.I originally though it was cool;n quiet, but now it's kidna ridiculous

There is like an uncovered whole in teh back of the fan about 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide, which was where the screw box was connected, but I wasn't able to put it back on with the new grpahcis caard I used. I'm slightly afraid that the cool air is escaping from that hole.

Thats the current case I'm still using. It's 5 years old.

Yet another update apparently, speedfan, mbm, and asus probe are ALL giving me incorrect temperature readings. The only one that is giving the correct one is the bios. That idles at 45c sitting around on the bios. God knows where it goes while sitting in windows.
