I want to build my mother a PC but it doesn't have to be a top-of-the-line type PC. She will basically be using it for office-type stuff- Word, Excel, etc. I'd like to keep it in the $200-300 range and to do that I'll be using some parts off her old one, like the drives and whatever else I can. So, basically I need suggestions on a barebones system. Any suggestions?

i have a friend that is a cheapass and here is what i reccomend to him..

a go to dell.com every week or so.. type sc420 in the search box and see how much it costs.. eventually it will be on sale for about $250.. it is $350 right now, but has been on sale for $250 or even less numerous times especially in the first 2 months of this year..

buy either of those.. and a 512mb stick of ram for what $30 now?

you can build a computer for $300.. but it will be harder.. and both above options have keyboard and mouse.. and the wallmart ones have shitty speakers too...

oh.. and now that i actually read your post.. since you are recycling off her old one.. then maybe you could get her a shuttle type comptuer within that budget...

this:.. plus your choice of a duron/sempron/xp/xp-m http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16856119002

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16856101460 i have the v2 of this.. but now, i would get the s754 one before this for less money...
with $40 ish for 512mb of memory, and a $50 ish duron or something this could be done for $300...

Yeah, I was actualy looking at a Sempron 2200+ barebone system that was $120. I thought that might be a good start. I forgot to mention, which you all probably figured out anyway, I won't need a keyboard, monitor or mouse.

get a sempron cpu, like 512mb corsair value select ram, ither a motherboard with onboard video or something like a radeon 9200 or something, /w onboard sound and u should be roughly in that range probably add a 80gb wd hd or a 160gb wd hd

Sempron 2200+ $60.50
Abit NF7-M nForce2 w/GF4MX video $92.75
512Mb (2x256Mb kit) Corsair DDR400 $48
Western Digital WD400BB 40Gb IDE w/round cable $52
Antec SLK1605b black steel case w/350watt power supply $69
..and use the CD drive out of her old machine.

Total: $322
