I'm building a pretty high end gaming rig for a friend in a few weeks and he has requested a widescreen lcd of 19" or 20", no larger. He is primarily going to be playing world of warcraft, and wants it to look absolutely beautiful. It's unlikely he will play many fast paced fps games, so I guess response time isn't the highest priority. While I'm not new to this, I've just returned from 4 months in Germany and haven't kept up with lcds really. I myself still use my trusty crt, so I dont have any extended hands on experience. He has around 300 dollars in the budget for this, having usb on the lcd is a nice plus he has requested, but i wont rule out suggestions for quality lcds without them. Thanks!

Bump back into existance. This should be easy? Last I knew dell 2001fpw were good, tho I've seen a lot of panel/dvi failure issues in a lot of specific models reported now, just lookin to avoid things like that. Help???

Well, NEC 20WGX2 is great 20" consumer display - it's very nice for gaming and watching movies, although I don't think it fits his 300$ budget. IMHO if his getting pretty hardcore gaming rig, he should invest into nice display - monitor is single component he'll be in direct contact all of the time, and I would always max my monitor budget, even if that means saving on some other component (besides he'll most likely transfer monitor to his next rig, while most of these "high end components will be obsolete in few years time).

I have a pair of CTL 195UW LCD's and I love em. You can find one for $200-250 or better. For the money it is a great gaming monitor. They have a 5ms response time, 1440x900 res, 700:1 contrast ratio, and a 3 year NO HASSLE warranty. The built in speakers are horrible and virtually inaudible but who uses those on a gaming machine? In your budget range I think this is the best bang for the buck. Take the extra $50.00 or so from the $300 budget and get him a really nice USB hub and some change.

EDIT: Forgot to say, they have both DVI and VGA connections and cables included in the box too.

Well I'm soon getting an LG L204WT but it's more for all round use, not only for gaming...I've read the whole 40 something page thread and it's got mostly good reviews. Hopefully someone more qualified a better answer..:)

...budget now could possibly be as high as 400, would prefer some newegg/zzf links to things vs finding them at circuitcity or such, so much more expensive and that annoying tax thing you know :) He will be running an 8800gts with this, so hopefully it can run at its native widescreen res, its become apparent to me he will be playing wow and its new expansion, for another year, maybe two. He really isnt into any other games, this computer's other purpose would be for movies/music and CAD work. No matter which lcd I look at, there always seems to be an issue with buzzing/brightness at the corner/color issues/grays. Is there an lcd in thsi price range, at this size, that is trouble-free? Theoretical perfection in a screen is worthless if there are a few dead pixels or other such minor problems, I'd rather something more mediocre in overall quality/specs that is lacking annoying quirks. Sorry for the ramble, and thanks for any and all suggestions!
