My current monitor, a 4 year old Gateway EV700 gives me eyeball pain after a few minutes of viewing. I'm looking into buying a monitor. Right now, I'm unsure as to what technology I should get, but money wise I'm leaning toward CRT for obvious reasons. Anyway, as for the cause of this pain, is it related to the way a CRT operates or could it be because of the age of the monitor? Basically I'm asking, which tech is easier on the eyes?

LCD will be easier on the eyes, but what refresh rate are you using?

Low refresh rates cause a lot of eyestrain: a 60hz refresh rate gives me a migraine.

1152X864 @ 75HZ, that's the highest refresh rate it can display at that setting. I hve the text set to 125% but I still get eye strain.

That's almost definitely your monitor. At 1280x1024 your monitor gets 60Hz. If I look at 60Hz for more than 2 minutes my eyes start to hurt. Hell at 1024x768 it only gets 75Hz, which is still too low IMO.

Some people can take 60 Hz, some can't. I personally can't, and thus I have my old 19" Sony Trinitron (CPD-420GS I think ) that does 85Hz at 1280x1024. I would say that (for a CRT) 85Hz is my minimum.

An LCD will be easier on your eyes than a CRT (unless you have to squint to read text, but I mean in general from the technology). Even though LCDs say they are 60Hz, it's not the same as a CRT as the pixels on an LCD are either on or off and not scanning.

I use 85hz, because if it's any lower, I notice..

But back to the question: LCDs don't have refresh rates in the way that CRTs do. There's no gun re-drawing the screen 80 times a second, the pixels just dim/brighten. As far as minimizing eyestrain goes, LCDs are probably the way to go, but I really can't see it being a problem if you have a refresh rate of 85hz+. Then again, everyone's different.

Yeah, I thought it was the monitor, I can stare are the LCD on my dads laptop for hours without any problems, eventhough the screen is terrible. I guess I'll have to get a LCD. Any of you guys know any good ones? At least 17 inches, I don't really play any games with fast moving images like FPS. Starcraft tops the list really. And, naturally, the cheaper the better. O, it must have an analog connector because I'm using an 7000 series Radon.

Yeah, definitely go with an LCD, its so much easier on the eyes for two reasons.

1. No flickering.
2. Extremely sharp text when running at native resolution.

Since you don't play fast moving games like FPSes, that's all the more reason to go LCD. The main problem with them is their price though.

After using an LCD everyday and then going home to a CRT, you can definiely tell the difference. Even the best CRTs look blurry to me. And I always notice the flickering, no matter how high the refresh rate. There is definitely more eye strain using a CRT. It's all in the way it draws the image. My new LCD should be waiting for me today.

Well, would I be able to find a good one, that is at least 17 inches, for about 300 dollars?

I use 100mhz at 1920x1200 and i still notice my eyes get fatigue after a couple of hours... but on my LCD (1800FP), i can use it all day just fine... i use to be very tolerant of CRTs of course, been using them since i was 11, so well over 15 years before i got my first LCD, but after using the LCD, your eyes gets accustomed to it. I grew up with headaches/migraines that doctors use to attribute from everything from allergies, to MSG... But since using the LCD, i get MUCH fewer headaches.

OK guys I get it, LCD is better on the eyse. BUT could someone PLEASE recomend me a good LCD for no more than 400? PLEASE!!!!!!!
