Need some voerclocking advice!

Hi all,

My system see sig, is a new build. I finally managed to get it stock stable. When I say stock, I mean that I have not touched anything in the BIOS. I only flashed the mobo to current BIOS. I'm using ccc 6.5. MS daul-core hotfix.

1. I want to overclock the fx-60 to 2.8Ghz (im now on stock -> 2.6Ghz).

2. I want to overclock my memory.

I dont have that much experience with overclocking but did ALOT of reading behind the theory. Now I really dont want to go into BIOS and change anything on my own. So, does any1 here know some good settings for me to try out? That would be great guys

2 ways to do overcloking:
1- thru bios
2- or thru 3rd party software
for 3rd party overclocking software, check the sticky
 
OK. Thanks for the links. I did the reading from those links and others. Got my system up to 2800 Ghz -> 14 x 200 (vcore at 1.4v)

Memory timing at 2.76v:

cas: 3
trcd: 4
trp: 4
tras: 8

My memory is rated at 550Mhz with 2.8v. Now with those new settings that I did, does this mean that I am now using my ram with speed 550Mhz?

Also, is it best to increase the FSB and try to maintain the cpu multiplier? or is it the same either way?

This will clear alot of un-answered questions for me, so please can you explain :)

your memory looks to be running at 400MHz (2x200 DDR) unless the SPD sets a memory divider to increase the memories bus speed.
It certainly helps to boost the FSB/HTT as high as it will go :)

Firstly, find the max speed your mobo will do.
Set the memory to a much slower speed, reduce the cpu multiplier a lot and use Clockgen to boost the HTT while running Stress Prime 2004 on memory test.
Leave about 20 seconds between increases. When Prime 2004 crashes, roll back a couple of settings.
If your chipset cooling is good you may get a bit more by boosting the chipset voltage.

Now set the memory divider back to 1:1 or equivelant and find the max speed you can get from the memory with your current timings.
Once you have found the max speed, try speeding up some of the memory timings, not all parts of the memory will be maxed out. You should be able to get a little more performance :)

Overclock the cpu after with the multiplier.
 
If your RAM is rated that high... Drop the multiplier by 2x, and shoot up the FSB by 10 until you're unstable. I'd assume you might be able to get 12 x 230-240 (allowing your ram to run at 460-480 speeds).

Remember, a higher FSB will allow for more data transfer between the system. A 10x multiplier with a 280FSB setting will be faster (in certain, memory bound situations) than having 14x with 200FSB.

- changed the multiplier and fsb -> 10 x 275 = 2750Mhz
- increased cpu vcore to 1.4v (was 1.36v)
- increased memory DRAM votlage to 2.8v (was 2.76v)

All is well and running good. I even got higher scores in 3dmark06, but there is one thing:

Now my post takes ages, like 20-30 seconds, when switching the pc on. After this duration the machine starts normally and the monitor switches on. This does not happen after a restart, only when switching the machine on from an off state.

Is this normal after overclocking?

Clock it back and make sure it speeds up the boot.
I'm thinking that your Bios was quite well optimised for boot up before you overclocked and that settings which speed the boot process up have now been reset perhaps.

Its also possible you have added a hard disk (pre boot) delay, you should be able to find the setting for that in the BIOS. This setting prevents the hard drive from being accessed for x seconds so hard disks which take a while to spin up are ready.
 
hmmm...looks like when I raise the fsb to 275, I get this long post before windows. Any1 had this symptom before?
