Need some Video Card Advice

Need some advice guys.

I’m in the process of building a new i930/5870 machine. However, I pushed my luck a little too long with my current rig and I believe the video card has died out. Comp seems to be running fine but I have no video to the monitor after boot up. Normally I would just scrap the whole box but I haven’t been very diligent about backing up my files. The old machine is an Athlon 64 4000 / GTX 7800 / Asus A8N Premium mobo (yes I know - I’m long overdue).

The question is – Do I buy a super-cheap video card to replace the 7800 so I can (hopefully) keep it running long enough to back up my files or do I try and plug the 5870 into it (which will be used in the new build so I’m not wasting any money)? Not even sure if a 5870 would even be compatible with the Asus mobo and PC P&C PSU.

Any advice/help is appreciated.
 
Are you just trying to get your files off? Why not just plug the HDD into your new machine. If you don't have an IDE connector on your new machine you can pick up an external usb enclosure cheap and throw the drive in there.
