My DFI Ultra Infinity nforce 2 just did the last cold boot bug and corrupt bios that it is going to do for me. Time to upgrade. I have 2 setups in mind as I am on a pretty tight budget. I currently had a XP-M clocked at 2507 mhz on water so I want to go faster than that but I am not a big gamer. I run Linux mainly and file serve and encode and browse the web.Heres my 2 systems I am thinking of picking between

First system
Intel Pentium 805 or 930 processor overclocked on water ($120-$209 depending on cPU)
2 gb Gskill DDR2 Ram $147
Asus P5LD2 motherboard $117 (anything cheaper that works good???)
Geforce 6XXX vid card (whatever I find cheap with TV out)

Second system
AMD Opteron 165 overclocked on water ($260)
2 gbGskill Extreme DDR500 memory ($172)
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D ($112) or DFI Ultra Infinity ($89) maybe a biostar???
Geforce 6XXX vid card unless it has AGP then reuse my 5600ultra 256mb card I have now.

I am open to all suggestions. Do the DFI's still overclock great? Are they still buggy and quirky as hell?Should I look at another board?

Which system would everyone reccomend? The opteron would be quite a bit quicker correct? I am on a very tight budget right now as I just had surgery and am off work for a while. Thats why the 805 caught my eye. Please help.

edit: I have an Antec 550W power supply currently but it is 20 pin if that will matter. I amnot upgrading power supply again.

hehe, i'd say the 805 /w the asus mobo as it's cheaper and the mobo is good if you're not really going to do any amazing overclocking (the Pentium D 805 has some amazing potential though) if you're looking for a good mobo for that opteron 165 go with the asrock dual939. it's solid, and with OCWorkbench beta bios overclocks like crazy. (OCWorkbench has a huge community that's very helpful). mine goes up to 2.87GHz on air, not prime stable, but heck if i can play counterstrike source for hours with that it's good enough for me. easily overclocks to 2.7 better than an fx60 woohoo! i got a refurbished mobo from newegg for $46 shipped and the $70 off coupon from monarch.com for the opty 165 so that's a mobo/cpu combo for $319. newegg has the retail of mobo for $67 and shipping fluctuates from 1.99 and 4.99 all the time. conroe's right around the corner man... hehe. if you get the 805D it'd be cheaper to upgrade, heck if you get a mobo that just happens to be able to run the conroes that'd be even more awesome. :p
what do you mean by cheap on vid cards? hehe. a 7600gs can be had for under a $100 now, and i've seen people selling their 7800gt's for $190. if you don't need too much power you can just keep your agp card with the asrock mobo as it can run either agp or pcie.

edit: crud just noticed that your psu is 20pin, umm lets see does it have the 4pin connector for mobo's also because the asrock mobo requires that.
haha. you have pretty much the setup i want, except that i have a different psu, and my vidcard is a 7600gt ($159 ) :D all i need now is the gskill ram.

I'd say go with the 805. Overclocked it will do quite nice for the encoding. The DFI boards still o/c well and are still quirky as hell. Being on a budget and the fact that you encode (umm, what? video?) plus your lack of gaming makes me suggest the 805 over the 165. The 930 is nice as well, but the 805 apparently works miracles in OCing (esp. with water).

You're going to have to buy a 20 to 24 pin adapter for the PSU, these are cheap though.

I have definately decided on the pentium D right now. I am still debating which one the 805 or the 930. The 805 overclocks alot easier right? The only reason I Was thinking of the 930 is that it runs at lower temperatures and has bigger cache. Istill need to get a new mount for my waterblock for either of the two but the 930 overclocks good with its stock HSF from what I gather temporarily. Is the 930 really worth it or is it just barely faster than the 805? 805 would allow cheaper motherboards too though right?

Well here is what I ended up getting. :D
ASUS P5WD2 motherboard ($110)
Pentium D 930 retail ($170)
2 gb Gskill DDR2 800 memory ($179)
MSI Geoforce 6600GT ($72)
MSI Wireless network card w/bluetooth ($25)
Kworld Hardware Mpeg encoder card ($34)
Arctic Silver 5 ($6)
Big Typhoon CPU cooler ($30)

$626 a little over my budget but it should workout great for me though. I need a new monitor as well my 15" LCD isnt cool anymore.I might not use the big typhoon and order a waterblock update for my danger den block but I got it cheap so.I might not need the Hardware mpeg encoder card either. I have one now that isnt a hardware model but a software model and it kinda sucked on my last system trying to encode on the fly but maybe with the dual core system this wont be a problem and I wont need it.I cant wait to see what it overclocks at.

Im looking for that motherboard but I wanted to get the premium version because I heard it overclocks a little better. Where did you buy yours at?

I got it at newegg. I just ordered a SB Audigy 2 zs and some nice sennheiser headphones as well for this system. I wish the parts would all get here already.
