Alright, I just got a new system for university. In the past I've always had a computer that's been a couple years obselete, but finally I had a chance to build one that was pretty reasonable.

But it runs like shit. My old P4 1.6 with 256mb sdram and geforce4 MX smokes it in every single application except Doom3. Even programs like IE take forever to load, are choppy, and nasty. I've updated all my drivers that I could find. My system specs are as follows.

AMD 64 3000+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
2x512mb Corsair ValueSelect PC3200 DDR400
ATI X800 Pro VIVO (unmodded)
2x80gb WD 7200
LG CDRW/DVDROM
Creative Audigy 2
Thermaltake 420W PurePower

Can anyone offer any insight as to what could be causing me my issues? Everything except Doom3 runs at substandard performance, while Doom3 runs just as I expect it should. Help?!

Did you do a clean install of windows? You should backup, format, install XP, install SP2, install board drivers, install other drivers and retest.

I'm with summoner on this. With an issue that seems to be so widespread I'd start by formatting, or at the very least doing a repair install.

Another one for OS reinstall, XP is real picky about changing main pieces of hardware.

Thing is, it was built from scratch... I have in fact done clean new installs of windows (with formatting in between) several times now.. I figure there must be some conflicts between hardware or drivers of some sort. If nobody has any solutions, I will try one more format/install tomorrow, but its getting ridiculous. I paid good money for this system, with assurances from all parties involved that it would be quite good. I'm kinda getting frustrated..

Yes I have, its all good. I would rather not have to bring it back to the shop, since I do need it for university, but its basically useless to me. *sigh*

Its almost as if the computer is forgetful or has ADD... I tried to install the newest CAT drivers... and it takes a couple mins for installshield to load up... and then its been literally 20 mins and I am still waiting for the install screen to show up, even though its clearly running. This is f*cking stupid.. some of my hardware is definitely faulty. Has to be. This is junk.. I am going to format everything and do this ONE last time, and if it isnt running at the level its supposed to, I might just throw it out the window. Or bring it all back. Depends on how pissed I end up, lol...

Tried only one stick of ram yet. Sounds like a RAM issue to me....

Also just to be sure check to see if you have the latest bios update

Yep, I think it IS ram. Upon further investigation, it looks like my local shop tried to chump me by putting in a stick of generic ram instead of 2 Corsairs like I had specified. So I bet I am getting compatability issues between the 2 different types of ram. Wankers.
