Currently on a 4 year old system(core2duo 4620 overclocked, asus 775 mobo, ddr2 ram, gtx460, 520w corsair psu, SSD, AC-1 sound card), been out of the game too long to know what's going on, I'm so lost with all these new processors. I could really use some input!

Came across a set on ncix for:
-i5 4670K quad core
-"MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX Motherboard"

the ASUS Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150 is also another option. Although I used to LOVE asus and had full confidence in them, My girlfriend bought an asus laptop and it has been a pile of sh** since she got it and I totally lost faith in asus.

for $430.

I would want to add:
-"G.SKILL F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL Ripjaws X 16GB 2X8GB Kits 240PIN DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600"
for $150 and be set

I opted out of i7 and want to go more budget as I game, but I don't game that hard, I just like a fast running computer that can run CS:GO smoothly as well as some other higher resource tasking games, maybe bf4 and when it's out, gta5. Also, needs to be able to run Adobe lightroom and photoshop. Currently, Lightroom really tasks my computer.

Will I be ok with this setup? I'd like to keep it budget, it's already a little pricey. Maybe I have cheaper options? I've been on this current setup for 4 years now, and I just overclocked it last year with a nice improvement. I'd like to spice up the new i5 with a slight oc and just enjoy that speed.

I need to know if a 520W corsair PSU will be adequate, and I'm sure I can run my gtx460 with this mobo, correct? It's going in a antec 1200, so lots of space. Pairing up with a SSD and 2 HDD's.

My middle son plays that! He bought himself a 144hz lcd because it helps with that game or some crap.... no idea!

The build looks good, if you wanted to reduce the $$, you could go with 2 x 4 gb's of memory. If you plan to OC a bit, maybe get a CM 212+ cpu cooler, although it will be fine for the game.
 
Good game, it really focuses on CPU, not so much the GPU like most other games. It's earlier games, CS:S were pretty much all CPU.

So you think 16GB ram is over kill? As for OC'ing, I have an older Zalman 775 copper cooler, keeps my temps nice and low currently BUT I don't know if it's compatible with the 1150 socket/new mobos. Tried looking for an updated bracket but couldn't find anything on them.

is this the cooler? I see there's a new "evo" version but can't get it through ncix.

That is the one. I use those on my kids and esxi/server cpu's.

I don't think you are even using 4gb much less 8gb and 16gb, unless you are running any VM's/photoshop. So 8gb would be good.

I think I'll go with that, save the ~80 bucks and i'll have upgrade room in the future if I want.

As for MSI mobo's, I'm so far behind with thing, I'm not sure if this thing is up to par with what I need, It's a deal from NCIX and i'm hesitant because I know they like to try and get rid of older stuff, but at the same time, 1150 is fairly new, correct?

And to my understanding, newer processors are using less power correct? I'd be ok with upgrading to this setup and keeping my current 520W Corsair psu?

Ready to jump on this build soon! Tired of the old girl struggling!
Side note: Should I be reinstalling with a hardware replacement this significant? Just did one, wouldn't like to do it again haha.

Personally I always do a fresh install, but I have everything backed up, so its pretty painless.
I am not sure what model the corsair is, but usually they are good.
 
I'll just do it, fresh install makes it all seem that much nicer anyway.

For desktop, there isn't a really difference between ivy bridge and haswell in performance (most significant improvements on haswell are iGPU and overall power consumption).

For best bang for your buck:

1. You run Photoshop so it's always nice to have more RAM. 16GB is not so much. Choose the cheapest 1600MHz ones out there (about $100 for 8GBx2). From sandy bridge, memory speed doesn't scale so well.

2. You want to play new games like BF4, it's a both CPU and GPU intensive game, so you don't want i5.

3. Get a Z77 mainboard ($60-100) and an i7 3770K (used for $240, new in box for $250-260).

4. Get a good closed loop water cooler (Asetek made) for about $60-100 (Corsair H55/NZXT Kraken X40). You can easily overclock your 3770K to 4.5GHz for daily use.

5. If you want to use dual chip graphics cards like GTX 690/Radeon 7990 or SLI/CrossFireX, you will need a 800W PSU. Else, a 500W Plus 80 PSU (about $60) is good enough (550-600W if you have many drives).

6. NVIDIA cut the price of GTX 780 so get a new one for $500 or used one for $350.

Though I appreciate the input, everything you've listed off is out of my price range lol. I have an addiciton to power(computers and motors...) but I'm going to hold myself back on my PC because #1, I'm in school and not made of money, and #2 I could go nuts if I decided to go any further than my current budget. There's like no in between haha. Also, I don't like used electronics, so I'm not going to go that route.

Like I said, Thanks for the information, it IS helpful and I will look around a bit, But I doubt I'll go i7, It's just out of budget.
 
Stick with the i5 4670K and that MSI motherboard. My room mate uses the G45 Gaming version of the same series (much cheaper without needless frills) and it's been rock solid so far. Processor isn't OC'd much (4.2GHz) but that isn't important with today's games being usually graphics limited.

You shouldn't need anymore than 8GB of 1600MHz ram for gaming, but some newer games show benefits from moving up to 16GB and also faster speeds. Although it's not worth it with todays insane RAM pricing.
 
So I just realized black friday sales are coming up and I'd like to jump on the opportunity. You guys think I'll find deals on the stuff I want? Or should I be making a list of options relevent to prices such as possibly an i7 + compatible mobo? Think prices will go low enough to match up with an i5 build?

So now my bottle neck is my geforce GTX460. What should i go with? I'm a nvidia guy, so no ati. Realistically, I don't want to spend more than $300 but that seems like chump change for all these high end video cards these days. 780ti was on sale for $500 something and that's just too much. I mainly play csgo, and just have a desire for a snappy computer. The SSD was unreal when I first put it in, most noticeable I've ever done.

Still pissed that i can't use my razer barracuda sound card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! This was explained to me before I purchased everything.
