Hey guys so I put 12gb of G skill into my i7 920 build. I am almost certain one or more of the 6 sticks is messed up (very very long story, if it becomes important I will try to describe it here) and I am just wondering if there is any software that can which sticks are messing up. Also... is it possible with DDR3 ram to put in say 4 or 5 instead of just 3 or 6 sticks?

Thanks for any help

Details would be very helpful, especially the event which is causing you to think a memory module is bad.

It isn't "bad" to put only 4 or 5 modules in, but they won't be running in triple channel unless you put in either 3 or 6 modules. The only affect would be to performance, stability should not be affected.

Ok let me try to be as detailed as possible.

I put together my rig - i7 920, 12 gigs of gskill, p6t mobo, 2X evga gtx260s overclocked, 1 v raptor, 1 tb wd drive, cm 680 case.

I am not sure exactly what caused the ram to fail but i will try to guess ( i am also guessing that it is the ram but i am almost certain of this)... So I put the comp together, and like an idiot i screwed in all the yellow screws that hold up the motherboard (so i guess i was shorting something) it worked for a few restarts and then just blank... no output to monitor, nothing. I took out those extra 3 screws... still didn't work. RMAd the mobo, cpu, tried a difft psu, nothing, tried a difft vid card, nothing. Took out all except for 2 ram sticks... didnt work

At this point you can imagine was ready to literally cry :) I decided to give the RAM a try again. I took out 3 of them and magically it worked. Then I put a 4th in... worked. Put a 5th in worked, put the 6th in didnt work. There is one particular slot that I literally have to keep taking the ram out and putting it back in everytime i move the comp even a short distance. And I mean i have to do this like 10 times before it works. After I put it in it always works until the comp is moved again. I was so tired of dealing with this piece of crap I decided to just install windows and not touch the comp... After vista installation it does that thing where it checks your hardware... it froze at 75% so i had to restart and it booted into vista fine.

5 minutes after using vista, it just froze... mouse cursor doesn't move, nothing. This happend again upon 2nd restart but not after 3rd one. Then again I only kept it on for like 10 mins the 3rd time. I can only guess it's the RAM that is messing up. I would assume it's the slot for the RAM but I got a brand new mobo after that incident.

Any help would be really appreciated guys.

Without rehashing your story to try and fill holes, I'd like to determine a couple things.

1. Has the system every ran fine? Booted fine and continued running stable for a decent amount of time.

2. When the PC won't boot, where does it hang? Is it consistently the same place? Does it POST ok? etc.

3. Have you tried each individual memory module by itself? That is, only one module in slot 0.
