Alright, I have a litter bit higher than basic understanding of networking and I currently have my network setup like:

Internet -> Router -> Switch -> Computers/Servers/Game Consoles

But I want to change it so I can enable VPN on one of my servers and It doesn't work when its behind a router.

How I want to setup my network is like this:

Basically I want to remove my router and use Server 01 as the dchp server to assign all the other computers on my network an IP

I know its possible, I just don't know how to configure windows server to do that. If someone could help me or post a link to a tutorial that would be great.

you would need 2 nics in the server.

better idea, turn off DHCP on the router, and let the server do DHCP and DNS for the lan machines.

You can just turn off DHCP on your router, have it turned on your server and you should be good to go.

If you need help with setting up DHCP on your server, can you please give us a little more info about the server (Windows server 00/03/08 or a Linux-distro)?

Well I want to make my router just a hotspot and move it to the center of my house, where it should be. I do have 2 nics in my server so if I need to have the modem on one nic and the switch on the other nic. If I could just do it how I have it in the network diagram that would be prefered. The server I have is Windows Server 2003 and the switch I have is an Unmanaged 16 port switch(DSS-16+).

Keep the router as your gateway, have the server hand out dhcp, I'd stay away from having the server do internet sharing/routing. What exactly is your reason to take out router? If its just to centralize wireless grab a cheap AP

Tried setting up DCHP on server01 and disabling DCHP on my rotuer and no luck. My server wouldn't hand out IP's

If I understand your needs, you change your entire design to be able to reach your 2003 server via VPN.
If you can forward ports on your router, letting TCP 1723 and UDP 500 in should do the trick.

Here is a tutorial if you want to go the 2003 server dhcp way, but my 2 cents are to give Microsoft OS as less routable IP addresses as possible.

Good luck

did the DHCP service start? if you had DHCP on router turn on, DHCP service will see that and sometime doesn't start ( atleast in SBS 03). make sure service is start.

AGAIN WHY DO YOU WANT TO REMOVE ROUTER? Pop 1723 to the lan ip of the srever and ur done for PPTP

I didn't remove the router, I did exactly what you said in an earlier post.

but why are you trying to run dhcp on the server. all you need to do is put a static lan ip on teh server you want to vpn into. pop port 1723 for PPTP to that local ip and ur done
