Hello, My name's Chris. This is my first post on here ;)

Im curretly in the process of putting together a PC Build list for my new computer.

I am currently at University and am studying BA(Hons) Interactive Multimedia; I do alot of work on Photoshop, Director and other multimedia based programs so i am looking for a graphics card that will tend my needs. The motherboard i have chosen is as follows:

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, ATX, DDDR400, PCI-E, 2x Gbit Lan, USB 2.0, 1394, 7.1Ch Audio, 4 x SATA, Raid

The price range i am lookig at is about £100-110 and i am looking for a PCI-Express card.

Any help would greatly be apprechiated as it has been quite a while since i built a PC up and im not up to scratch with the latest technologies etc.. so i would really like to get the best i can for my money.

would 110 pounds be enough to buy a 6600 or 6600GT?
If so I would have to suggest that card to you.
 
For that money the best you should be able to find is either a Nvidia 6600 (non-GT) or a ATI X700 Pro.
Don't think the money would be enough for a 6600GT but if you can find it or are able to add another £30-40 I would strongly recommend a 6600GT as it is a lot better than the other cards. :)

You will have to look around a bit and you will probably only find it for that price on the net.
 
I can't help you because I don't know of the price ranges in the UK, sorry.

You should ask an admin to edit the name of your thread to "UK man needs help picking card" or something around those lines so UK ppl can help you easier.

110 Pounds is about ~$200US. Help some people who are clueless as to what to suggest? Yes, prices for product are pretty much the same in the UK. Now, continue.

I have done a bit of hunting and have found this card:

128MB Gigabyte GV NX66T128VP - GF6600GT (NV43 Ultra,1000/500Mhz,128MB DVI,TV Out-SLI,VIVO,PCI-E x16

Now i could probably strech my budget for this card but im wondering, because it's 128MB instead of the 256MB i was origionally after, will i see a significant difference in performace? If so will the difference be foe the better or for the worse?

I will be wanting to play some games on this machine, such as the new age of empires when it comes out, command and conquer, call of duty and other similar type games.

(i will also be wanting to hook up two monitors, i believe this can be done with a converter for the digital connector to a standard analog monitor plug yes?)

Chris, don't stare yourself blind on the amount of ram. The important stuff is what kind of ram it is and at what speed.
I'll bet that the 256mb card you were looking at was a nvidia 6600 card. Yes it has 256mb ram and 256mb is more than 128mb but it run at a speed of 700Mhz compared to 1000Mhz on a 6600GT card, plus on the GT card the ram is DDR3 insted of DDR ie 3rd generation DDR memory. :)
So what does this say? The 128mb DDR3 memory is way faster than the 256mb DDR.
 
If you can find a 6800nu, it's much better than the 6600gt and if you can find an X800non-pro it is about on-par with the 6800nu (if not better) for not much more than the 6600gtlast time I checked.

I'm not sure, but reading through the forums a couple times I've seen users saying that ati has better 2d performance.

cause they do. though i'd suggest going to the "Displays" section to ask that so you get objective opinions. You'll get into a war saying that here.
 
u say you're diong alot of photoshop and flash, i hate to say it but i'd say get a mac or a pentium, and you didn't mention anything abuot playing games so getting a 6600+ would be a waste unless you do CAD work in which case i'd get a workstation card...... sinc your university and probably on a tight budget i'd suggest using the money saved from video card and buying a pentium 4, your speeds in photoshop will skyrocket, maybe a cheaper socket 478 with hyperthreading, that would also make photoshop render times shoot through the roof.

QFT.

That kind of work is going to be limited by the CPU and amount of system RAM - a GeForce 4MX or Radeon 7000 will give you all the performance you need for this stuff.
