Need some help picking video card

current system in sig. get a 3700 on 3dmark. put in a 64 4000 yesterday. had a 3000, got a 3500 with that. anyway, my video card is kinda slow compared to my system. i dont want to go much over 250. below $250 would be great. I wont be overclocking my video card or instaling anything onto it. what would you recomend? I was thinking a 6800GT. There are so many manufacturers, how do I find a good one?

PS: when I try to run 3dmark demo on 1680 by 1050 it loads it up but then crashes and gets an error saying somthing like direct2ddivice9: create cube texture failed. out of video memory. whats that about? video card sucks to much to play it?
 
Yeah the video card is holding you back, but a 6800GT at $250 is a hard find, good luck with that, more liek getting a x800xl.
 
Unfortunately, you're probably not going to find a new 6800GT for under $280-300 right now.

If you want nVidia, there's always the 6800nu, which will be a bit faster than your 6600GT at higher resolutions with AA/AF on. If you want to give ATI a whirl, there's the X800XL which is $250 after $20mir, and usually a bit faster than the 6800GT.
 
6600GT SLI will be about the same performance as a single 6800GT, so it's a cheap and viable option (I'll hopefully be doing the same thing when I get back from vacation next week).

But if you want to upgrade from the 6600GT, then a 6800GT or an X800XL will probably be the best bet on a fixed budget.

Only in 3dmark. As soon as you start running higher res with AA/AF the 6800GT wipes the floor with SLI'd 6600's.
I'd go for the ATI X800XL...you can find one here for $229. :)

Now THAT'S a good price for an X800XL!

OP: In all honesty, wait about a week. nVidia is running some new "The Power of 3" camapaign to be unveiled on the 11th. No one knows what exactly it is, but who knows? Maybe it'll drive the prices down a bit for the 6000 series <shrug>. If not, then it's only a short wait that's been sacrificed.
 
Well, it seems like Nvidia is planning some huge price cuts on the 6800 series to coincide with their "Power of 3" campaign (same day and all)

So, if you can wait a few days, you may be able to get a great price on a new 6800 GT, which is a better card than the x800xl IMO

Also, you may want to check the FS/FT forums... I've seen 6800GTs go for really low in there. I ended up selling my 6800 GT there for $260, and others go even lower. Just keep your eyes open
 
k I will try to wait. Im in no hurry, been so busy latley. took me a month to find time to install the 64 4000. I just care about power to play games and multytask, not 3dmark scores. I love watching dscaler on one moniter and play games and cruise net on other. getting BF2 so want to be prepared for that.

For BF2, you might want to upgrade to 1GB, maybe even 2GB of RAM. ;)

eVGA is very good. All the manufacturers are pretty good, but the top are BFG, eVGA, Leadtek, and XFX imo.
