So the situation is this. I have a family friend who is now retired with her husband. She thinks her husband is into porn, and hosting it. I did a quick WebEX session with her while her husband was out, and sure enough I found lots of files and things related to adult entertainment. Her husband was smart enough to try and cover his tracks. He set their internet browser to delete all cookies and history when closed. Now here is where I need to some help in figuring out a solution for her. She thinks that he is also talking to people on Craigslist, and wants to catch him doing it.

So we agreed for the time being that I would not touch and of the settings on the machine or file/folders. I was thinking about getting her a router/firewall (hardware end-point device), and setting it up for logging and remote access so I could log into it remotely. If that was the solution what models (lower cost of possible) would any of you recommend or what feature set? Or is there a better way. I'm no so sure about a software solution unless it is something that can run in the background with out the husband knowing. Thanks.

Just install a keyboard logging tool and see what he is typing. That will also get you any passwords he has to accounts, IMs, emails, etc... That is what I would do at least.

FYI: If you did a GoTo session, you might have left a new GoTo icon on the desktop if didn't have it before. That icon is installed to the desktop by default on a new GoTo session.

This is a complicated issue, for a couple reasons. Firstly, it's invasion of privacy. If she owns the PC (as in, she paid for it and it's registered in her name), she can technically (from now) revoke his access to it if she thinks he's doing something wrong.

If she's installing a keylogger, be it hardware or software, she's only going to be using that information to get personal satisfaction. IIRC, the information gathered is inadmissible in any legal proceeding.

In addition to that, there have been cases where e-mail and other accounts protected by a password were accessed and information was downloaded illegally by an angry spouse resulting in some really large civil suits.

If he's a pedo, call the FBI. If she thinks he's just cheating, hire a god damn P.I. and get it over with. ;)

This is just really illegal, and I wouldn't pursue it any further.

I had her delete that.

Indeed; why not just... you know... talk to him about it :p

No kidding...

1. Hire a private investigator.

2. Key loggers will get detected by Antivirus softwares, sometimes creating an exception doesn't help that much and you risk getting caught (Ironic). This is the best option there is and please note its illegal for you to do this if it's not your system.

3. Live with mistrust or confront. [Right thing to do in my opinion is to talk openly about it, ppl might differ, you're in a position to know better than anyone here.]

4. Install spycams focused on LCD and keyboard :p.

catching someone red handed and pointing your finger at them is not a fantastic way to 'fix' this situation. if she is unhappy with the marrage and just wants to get divorced, sure you can use this as a reason to put that ball in motion.

but if she wants to stay with him, sneaking around and trying to "catch" the guy is not the way to do it.

I agree 100%. She is still hell bent on catching him.

I've setup Spectorsoft for people, used it myself too in the past. Good software, gives you very detailed reports.

They usually do a good job of staying on the whitelist of antivirus vendors, but last year Microsoft Security Essentials was catching a few of its files a couple of times..lol.

Regarding the marriage, at least it can help put someones mind at ease...they'll have proof to give themselves some closure, instead of accusing the other person just out of a feeling.

Some states are no fault...so this wouldn't have any impact on divorce and settlement.
