I have been doing some research on ultra wide monitors but keep getting confused with all the model numbers and 2018 version and overclocked vs regular, freesync g sync etc...

I think I want a g-sync 21:9 1440p monitor with 144Hz ish refresh rate and a glossy screen, IPS or VA i am not sure. What are some good candidates today what is on the horizon if I just wait?

    Currently gaming on an LG 55 OLED B8 with 2080ti and a 4.5Ghz 4770k.

^ That comes in G-Sync as well. Replace the last "F" in the model number with a "G". You'll find the -B on the end afterwards as well, it means the bezel/framing in the back are black instead of red. I almost never see the red for sale anywhere.

I've been shopping for a month or two and keep coming back to the 950's from LG. It appears to be the only ultrawide at 3440x1440 that has an IPS panel, LFC, FreeSync2, and HDR to boot. Kicking myself as it was on sale a few weeks ago at $875 at Amazon. $800 & B&H. I see it $900 or under I'm jumping.

That thing looks incredible and is probably the only one that could satisfy me after having used TVs-as-monitors for the past 4 years. Owned two of the 34" ultrawides prior to that and took a look at one in Sam's the other day...it was OK but the narrow vertical just kills it for me. I think that the 38" could be glorious and if I'm not mistaken, that's the first one that will do more than 75Hz.

And it has the same screen height at 16:10 so it harks back to the old PC days ( in a good way ) but has the new hot sauce with increase width also. Furthermore it's 2million pixels less than 4k so running games at 60fps on a decent card should be fine, and probably with some judicious settings or slightly older titles easily 90fps + with freesync. The PPI isn't insane either (but still decent) like a 27" 4k 16:9 which means less scaling issues and it has a decent vertical physcial height.

i think i just talked myself into buying one

That does look like a pretty fine monitor.

Keeping an eye on this to replace my PG348Q. 3440x1440 @ 100Hz is nice but 3840x1600 @ 175Hz is better. After gaming on an ultrawide for almost 2 years, I can't go back to 16x9.

    How does your 1070 handle 3440x1440? I'm at 60hz 1440p 16:9 and I can't always maintain 60fps as is.. Game dependant.

Depends on the game, really. I'm by NO means an FPS junkie so I don't mind things below 60fps unless its affecting gameplay. In those cases, I need to turn some things down. I play Destiny 2 most of the time and have it limited in game to 98fps and while sometimes its pegged there, it can drop to the 50's in some intense in game situations. Overall i'm happy with it but a 1080Ti is on the list to upgrade to.

Fair enough! Yeah I'm pretty happy as long as I can run High (not max/ultra) settings in most games. I typically turn down AA/shadows/ambient occlusion to increase fps without much loss in quality.. Just thinking if an ultrawide is in my future... Perhaps my distant future XD
