need some 5.1 assistance...

I have an audigy Ls card nad a 5.1 creative t5400 speaker set connected analog. I have a question. I run the creative sound test and all channels output properly. However, if I put in a home theater configuration disc and do the dolby 5.1 calibration test, I am not getting sound out of individual speakers exclusively, in other words center will be heard in the fronts, front left is heard in rear left etc...

my question is 2 parts--one anyone know why this would be?

and question 2-I use the system mostly for gaming-most dvd watching is done on a home theater TV setup---can I assume that if the creative speaker test is ok game software is outputting sound to the correct channels and this problem is limited to dvd playback and decoding?

You probably have some sort of CMSS turned on, that's the Creative software that spreads 2 channel audio across all your satellites. The creative speaker test probably takes this into account, whereas the Dolby test doesn't. If I remember correctly, CMSS is turned off when EAX is turned on, so in games you shouldn't have to worry about it.
 
Ill check that but I dont think CMSS is on beacuase I dont have the creative suite stuff isntalled--just the driver and surround mixer...

i just realized--could it be a setting on the dvd playback software-ie power dvd or windows media player?

you need to check your powerdvd/windvd copy. The "free" ones you get with sound cards are usually limted to only 2 channels. Hence the problems you are having :)
 
Thats possible if your DVD software is set to 2 channels and using Dolby Pro Logic II to upmix sound. In Power DVD you should choose the 6 speaker setting (it includes the subwoofer) and make sure Dolby Pro Logic II is turned off. Pro Logic II is similar to CMSS in that it upmixes 2 channel sound to all 5 speakers.

but the importatn thing is none of that should affect my DOOM 3 goodness right?
 
Make sure the sound card is set to 5.1 in the Creative and Windows control panel.

Since you're running an Audigy card I suggest you take a look at the doom 3 sound issues thread. I don't know a single Audigy series user who has Doom 3 surround sound working correctly. We're all waiting for a fix--
 
ah now it all makes sense... hahaha.

chances are the player is defaulting to pro logic 2 when it does the DD sound test. the same thing happened to me, but its fine.
 
thanks everyone--sorted it it all out last night--my power dvd is an older version without the support for the sound, and my windows media player was out of date. After updating wmp when i play the 5.1 sound test all is well..and since the computer isnt really my primary dvd viewing setup the power dvd down convert ias good enough nayway--

as for Doom 3 mine is working perfectly!
 
Audigy 1 user here with creative 5400 5.1 - no sound issues in D3 - sounds excellent!
