Need Shuttle Recommendations

A friend of mine is looking to build a mini shuttle type system that will be used for just about everything except for gaming. He will be taking it to college, which is the main reason he likes the idea of a shuttle system. Anyhow, I don't know much about shuttle systems, anyone have any recommendations for a good AMD shuttle system? I know shuttle makes some good ones, but I was just wondering what other people thought, suggested. I figure AMD since it will most likely be cheaper and he isn't going to game much, mostly home theatre type stuff and basic word processing, etc.

Suggestions?

it is the A64 based system and i run it... it really rocks it should get him through the 4 years of college or maybe the sn45 with say a amd 2500+

yea, yea its like black its in the "Ideq" series...Pretty banging, no need for oc'ing jus because its AMD64 and with the icing of 32 and 64 bit which means run the old and the new -_o.

if he is doing word processing a64 is extreme overkill. an athlon xp will do him perfectly. and it will last 4 years.

a word processor only needs so much, and a movie only plays so fast. unless rich, a college student doesnt need to waste money. (unless its on beer, of course)

the only thing he need worry about is storage space. so id say invest in a high capacity drive and something to back up his data. cdrw's are very cheap now, or if he would wanna rip and backup or burn dvd's then a dvd burner would be really neat.

for good video image quality get a matrox g550/450/400max and a very sharp monitor. very worth it.
 
Another vote for sn85g4. Just build a system with it and an a64 3000. Couldn't be happier. Otherwise go for the SN41G2V2 if you want to stick to AMD.
 
If you're looking at price, look at some of the older AMD shuttle systems and a slower chip.

At price vs. performance a 2500+ barton chip seems to be a good compromise, and there's a host of shuttles that will support it. I personally use a SN41G2. Get something with integrated video, and sound, but also with an AGP port, just in case...

On a side note if you're "going to college", then you'll probably want something with some expandability. I went through 5 dorm buddies who's PC gaming experiences consisted of nothing but solitare before college...and turned them all into CS addicts. :eek: I don't know if I should be proud or sad that I indirectly caused their grades to suffer *cough*. (this is to say nothing about a dedicated LAN CS server.....oops)
 
SN41G2 with a 2500+ Barton can handle everything that your friend wants.
