Need shared storage. Anyone help?

[mattchapman]

Hi
I have one computer and I'm ready to get a second and use it as a HTPC. Thing is I don't want to have to copy all my hard drives to the second computer (many files I want on both). Therefore I need somekind of shared storage.

I had heard that NAS is the solution for this. Can anyone tell me a little about NAS and how it works? I'd love to be able to have a separate HD enclosure which I can stick in cheap internal HDD's and have it shared by both computers.

Thanks

A NAS is basicly hard drives attached to a network, hence the name Network Attached Storage

You buy a consumer nas device from newegg etc, they can contain hard drives or they can come without so you can add your own. All you do it plug it in:

And in my computer you simply type \\nameofnas

and your shares pop up

hope this helps a bit

OK thanks. Is it typically just as fast as having the HDD's in your computer?

no, it will not be a fast as the drives in your computer. the speeds are fine aslong as you arnt trying to install programs on it etc.
