Hey guys, I think I know which ones the VRMs are, but I want to be sure. Thanks for schooling me :).

This is my GPU, the HIS 6850. Are the VRMs the black squares to the left of the gray cubes that say 'MAGIC R19'? And I see that there are three of these black squares. Does this mean that this board uses a 'three-phase' power circuitry design?

Generally, how do you know the number of phases that a GPU has in its power circuitry, and which ones are the VRMs? Why is it better to have more of them?
 
Generally, the VRMs are near the PCI-E connector, but that might be different with your card. It is most likely the little black squares that you are pointing out. From what I see on motherboards, the VRMs tend to have a gray cube next to them. It would be easier to tell by taking off your heatsink, and looking at where the thermal pads correspond to on the card. In my experience, the only things that got thermal pads are the VRMs and RAM (and bridge chip if your card has it, mostly applicable only to the GTX 2xx series and dual GPU cards).

The number of phases is mostly dependent on the number of gray cubes (my NF980-G65 had 10 little black squares, but only 5 gray cubes, and it's listed as a 4+1 phase design). That's what I believe though, correct me if I'm wrong here.

Power phases from what I see online is mostly a gimmick. Many manufacturers tote power phases as "More is better!" More power phases supposedly delivers better power to the GPU, so it can overclock better. However, a high quality 4-phase design will beat out a lower quality 8-phase design, so the most important thing is not how many phases a design has, but the quality of the components in the design.
