my friend just built me a new rig...

i got a sata wd 320 gig caviar

installed it..everything hooked up correctly but cant seem to install os on it.
i sees it in the bios. im not sure exactly what the problem is.

what are the step by step instructions on installing this.

my friend thinks there should be some drivers that come with the hd that i didnt get.
 
Your friend is on the right track. You will probably need to grab F6 drivers from your mobo (or addin card) maker's website, then do one of two things:

Put them on a floppy and hit F6 when prompted at the beginning of setup, then select the appropriate driver -OR-

Slipstream them on to your Windows XP install disk. This way, you'll always have them, but it takes more time up front. Good luck!
 
he tried getting files from the asus cd ....didnt work...he tried getting drivers from wd website....didnt work
 
It will not be on the WD site. the SATA drivers are for the SATA controller hardware on your motherboard.

Also, you will have to use a floppy if you do a generic windows installation from CD (Press F6 for third party SCSI or other drivers prompt). If you make a custom XP install CD you can slipstream your drivers into the installation (Text-Mode Drivers) and do a complete install from CD with no floppy.

Basically, you need the SATA or sometimes called RAID drivers from your motherboard manufacturer's site. Usually they include a floppy with the motherboard nowadays to do this.

The driver is not on WD's site, the drives are just dumb pieces of equipment.
