Hey guys,

I am interested in buying a Serial ATA Hard Drive. Hoping that it gives me a speed increase for my main system drive. I was looking at a Maxtor 120GB S-ata drive, then while reading the forums, I heard that WD drives are the only native s-ata drives? So what is the truth, and what kind of speed increase am I expecting to get?

Thanks

As of right now the Seagate 7200.7's are the only native SATA drives. WD et'all are bridged PATA drives. As for a speed increase, the difference is there albeit nominal unless you are using a 5400 RPM drive currently. If that's the case you'll be amazed :D From looking at the reviews around here and on storage review, the native Seagates are not out-performing the bridged drives, especially in the WD Raptors case. I recently went from a Maxtor PATA 2MB cache to a Seagate SATA 8MB cache - chose Seagate because of the 5yr warranty. Definately worth it, just don't expect it to make your system bleeding edge if your proc, ram, etc are not up to snuff.

I was under the impression that the Raptors were completely native SATA.

the raptors are bridged, but arent offered in pata.

they do run at 10k rpm tho, which makes em nice and fast.

A new hard drive would help somewhat, but it wouldnt increase your overall system speed much. (unless your hd was really slow).

Currently I am running a Maxtor 2mb PATA 60GB Drive for my main system drive. I was looking to increase that drive to a 8mb 120GB Drive. I was just looking for the brand with the best performance. My system should be able to handle it, you can see it in my sig.

The difference between 2 MB cache and 8 MB is significant enough. If you want the best in 7200 RPM performance, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 is your drive. There are also other nice drives available--the Western Digital 'JD' series, the Maxtor MaXLine III series, the Samsung P80 series, and the Seagate 7200.7/.8 generations.
