whats wrong with the s400? Canon's are generally regarded as being fairly good, so unless theres something specific to the way canon does something, i doubt those other cameras will make you much happier.
well, the ccd dies after 10,000 shots. horrifically. and that has put a serious damper on my impression of cannon quality. and it's going again, the second time in less then a year. so I hope to have better luck with Nikon (as my old 775 still works flawlessly).
To quote what ambientZ said, the S400 _is_ the best camera in its class.
I generally dont like Sony's image quality and Nikon is usually the next step down from Canon so I'd say try 4200 and see if you like it. One things the new Sony cams have going for them is they are relatively fast to focus (at least the T1/F828 are). However you have to factor in the difference in the cost of memory sticks, so when deciding add $50 to $100 to the price of any Sony camera depending on how much memory you were planning on buying for it.
thanks, im thinking the 4200 or 5200 now. despite canon's rep, my experiences have taught me otherwise... i guess it's like mercedes, percieved at the top of it's class, but also ranked the lowest in customer satisfaction... then again I dont meet that many s400 owners that have also taken over 10,000 photos. So yeah, I'll go play with the nikons some more today.
