I'm looking for a USB External HDD backup for my mother. She is elderly and any sort of internet backup, or technical knowledge, or anything but the simplest of use won't ever get used. The only thing she has that really needs to be backed up is pictures and documents. I need something that is very very simple to use for her so she can just plug it in, and the setup and backup is as simple as can be. Easy to set up. Easy to plug in. Easy to use.

Recommendations?

Any cloud provider of your choice (Dropbox, Onedrive, Google Drive, etc.) with folder sync - IF she can keep all of the docs/photos in specific folders. Likely a free account would suffice - 5GB and passive - nothing really to do.

If you can swing it, id actually look into azure backup or backblaze to automatically throw it in the cloud.. I like WD drives but passports can fail and then she's screwed.

Thanks :)

The cloud based idea might work, I'll definitely keep it in mind. However, simply getting the pictures from her camera onto the laptop is a challenge for her. Anything beyond checking her e-mail and basic web surfing is a real challenge. Also, between her pictures and documents she actually uses quite a bit of storage. She is taking advanced photography classes in retirement and has many gigs of photos.

The WD Passport is a good idea and its inexpensive enough to make a good gift. Simple is good. Drives do fail but if its simple enough and I can just get her to use one backup....it would save a lot of future problems.
