I have an ancient Acer Travelmate 250 and am looking for a replacement HD. I don't know much about the current HD (It says "30G Ultra ATA/100 HDD on the sticker on the front), but I want to find a compatible replacement which has both value and performance. I am looking at around 80gb. Can anyone help?

In terms of performance, the Hitachi 7K60 is king of the hill. 7200RPM and 8MB buffer, although it has a somewhat limited maximum capacity of 60GB. It only uses .1 watt more power than a comparable 5400 drive under load, although startup requirements are obviously higher with the higher spindle speed.
Hitachi has solid 5400 drives as well up to 80GB. Seagate and Fujitsu make 100GB drives. If you are looking for a faster drive, I'd settle for, at a minimum, 5400RPM and 8MB buffer. Looking on ZZF, there is a Samsung in the 80GB/5400/8MB category for $123, Seagate for $132, WD for $123, and Htiachi for $133. Seagate owns all of them on the warranty - they're the only maker to offer 5 year warranty on mobile drives.

The RPM is basically an indicator of the seek times and media transfer rates. The higher the RPM, the lower the seek times and the higher the transfer rates. That's good. However, the motor has to work harder to keep it spinning that fast, so battery life suffers. Not too badly, the screen is usually the biggest draw, but it's still a factor.uklegend said:
