Need recommendation for smart switch and network layout

The kids are growing and I need to update my internal network security. I plan to split my LAN into several VLANs and manage them with a smart switch. I'm looking at two models which fit my budget and seem to cover my use case.

1) Netgear GS748Tv5
2) TP-Link TL-SG2452

Anyone has experience with these switches? I'm also open to different recommendations

Below is a sketch of the planned network layout and switch configuration. Any comments on that?

Q1: Why a switch between the Modem and the Firewall?

Ditch all the other switches, you should be able to replace them with a single decent quality/brand smart/managed switch as you already mentioned.

He only has one switch, the others are virtual switches on ESXi.
 
I've never used either of those switches, but if you need a 48-port switch I highly recommend hitting eBay and ordering a Dell PowerConnect 5448. They are managed switches, has extensive CLI, and after basic config (IP and enable HTTP Server) a good Web UI.

I can't see the image like many others, but keep your modem connected to you router and run VLANs off the router. Then just setup your firewall policies to allow/deny traffic for specific VLANs. You can also combine services, such as OpenDNS, but blocking all traffic of a type except to your chosen service (so Allow DNS to 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 for your children's VLAN, then Deny all DNS traffic after that. Now they have to use the filtered OpenDNS you configured or be without internet).

The price tag on these is certainly interesting. I'll take a closer look. Thanks.

Why on earth do you need a 48-port switch at home?
Just grab the Zyxel GS1910 and/or GS1920 series and you have a nice value switch....

8 ports isn't enough and it was $40 for a 48 port managed gig?
 
Make sure to check power usage, would suck to drain wallet when you're only using 25% of the ports... just something to keep in mind.

Good point to take the power usage into account.

My panel has 36 ports. I need another 8 Ports for PCs directly connected to the switch. So I really need an 48 port switch. But only about 20 ports are actively used.

@firedrow: Do you have power consumption figures for the PowerConnect 5448?
 
I don't, sorry. We're installing them in our production racks, so I'm not super worried about power draw.
 
I went with the Nortel (80EUR on eBay)

So far it does the job. It also has plenty of options via web interface and CLI :)

It has four 40mm fans, so it's quite loud. Also the PINs are non standard (like the Dell). + and - are reversed. I ordered replacements and let you know how it works out.

Power usage is about 75 watts.
