one of my 6850 has died. 4 years of running OC'd will do that I guess. also means I get to upgrade. just need recommendations for best bet, either new or used (though if used, it better not be a fucking unicorn find)

I am still running a 2600k @ 4.4ghz, 16GB Ram, 850w PSU, 256GB 850Pro SSD. I game 1080p.. my monitor doesn't go higher, and an upgrade for it is not going to happen. Case size is not a concern. I have an existing water cooling loop, if the existing block(s) (XSPC Rasa) can't be moved over, the cost of a block(s) needs to be factored in.

I am not ATi/NVidia loyal. I am willing to do two slower cards, or a single card (ie a 970) but return for the money and lower overall cost is key. again the ability to run at 4K is not needed, but it better be able to do 1080p with everything at max.

Except the deal doesn't seem to exist anymore. I see $350 after rebate, which is a horrible price. You can get GTX 970 cards for $310-320 without any annoying rebate, and those are faster at 1080p.

My only complaint about the R9 290X is the power consumption and the amount of heat it produces. In terms of performance it really does the job but it is not the most efficient. I have seen GTX 970's as low as $250 in like new condition or open box. I'm currently using a Gigabyte G1 gaming 970 and it is seriously impressive. Temps never have ever gone over 70C no matter how long i game, it is pretty quiet and at 1080p there wasn't a game that i couldn't max out at 60 fps... Even at 1440p I'm seriously impressed that it plays almost every game on ultra at 60 fps. My recommendation goes to the GTX 970 and I'm not a fan boy at all for any side. Good Luck!

I just bought a ASAS STRIX GTX 960 4GB card and it's rocking with no issues. I game at 1080p and this card isn't even struggeling to run at very high settings in World of Tanks, Warships, Skyrim and Fallout 3. I am sure there are other games out there that might make it tougher on the card, but for me, this one seems a perfect fit and it ran me about $235 from Newegg and that's without the rebate card.

It's not unnoticably quiet, but it's not any noisier then the H50 watercooler on my CPU and once I get serious in multiplay with the headset on, I don't hear the system at all.

Agreed on the 960 GTX, although I'm using the 2 GB version, with no hiccups.

Only 1 6 pin connector needed, and it runs very quietly.

I haven't had a chance to test it with the free Metal Gear Solid, but I'm sure it will do just fine.
