My very good friend spilled paint on her CRT television while painting her living room. After about six hours she tried to power on the TV and nothing. I told her to start looking for a new TV, but that I would come over and look at it. Three days later, I came over and hooked it up to power and it started up.

After opening the case and looking at it, the PCB for the TV is covered in latex paint. But it now powers on with no problems. Should I recommend to her that she buy a completely new TV | or should she try to run it as is | or is there a way for me to clean the paint off of it without killing myself? any resonse would be apprieciated.

i'm not going to recommend to her that she run the TV as is without [H] support.

Is it even worth saving? If this is just some standard SD CRT, I can't imagine it is really worth too much at this point (well, definitely not now, but even before it got painted). Lot of risk and time for little gain.

You should get rid of it, the heat that a CRT generates could melt the paint and create harmful fumes.

don't turn it on anymore, the tv is done. its just a big paperweight now..for very large sheets of paper.

Also the amount of charge that can be held in a tube TV can be dangerous if you aren't careful. Sounds like a great excuse to upgrade :)

I'd hook it up outside for a while just because I'd be curious if it'd catch on fire or not.

sorry about that, thank you for fixing it for me!!

i'm going to see if they want to fire it up to see what happens.... maybe a few hours out on the porch or something.

You're just playing with fire (pun intended). The few hundred they'd save by not buying a new TV isn't worth saving versus the potentially thousands of dollars in damage and medical bills they'd have to pay if it caught fire or filled the house with poisonous fumes. Just tell them to buy a new TV. Even if it were ok on the porch for a few hours, that's no guarantee.
