hi
i recently bought a seagate barracuda 7200.10 PATA 320g. after a couple of weeks i noticed a lot of files that got written on it are corrupted (the programm that wrote those didn't complain at the moment of writing them, just can't open them now). i'm not entirely sure yet if this is really the drives fault (copying files in windows for instance worked fine so far), thus i wanted to test the drive with some diagnostic tools, or stress test tools.

the drive is running as slave to another old seagate drive (ST3120023A) (they're on the same data cable), WinXp, on some rather old P4 mobo

do you know any programs that i could test the drive with?

You can likely find some utilities at seagates website. I found alot of stuff for western digital the other day on their site. Just look for SMART tools or something along those lines...

the ulitmate boot CD (google ubcd) has seagate's seatools on it. You can boot from that CD and have Seatools look at the drive and test it, so that you can determine whether you will need to RMA it.

There was something called Drive Thrasher, but I am unable to find it at the moment...

It will thrash your drive to see if it can widthstand a "torture test" of sorts. That way, if it dies, you can RMA it now, instead of later. Seatools should have a program that tests the SMART status, otherwise, you could use Speadfan to check that.
