Need passive cooler for Barton 3.2

I'm looking for a passive heatsink for an AMD 3.2 (up to) Barton. No OCing will be done. It's going into an HTPC. Any suggestions? Thanks Also, I don't have mounting holes in my mobo so that makes it harder...MSI KT4 Ultra FISR

good luck, but i would say that you are SOL barring custom fabrication or specialty water cooling.

There arent many coolers that could handle that. the least you could do would be to tweak down the voltage, underclock it, and get somthing like this: http://svc.com/cl-p0071-14.html
If you arent going to have any airflow in this case, id call you nuts

i'm pretty sure that cooler requires through bolts to work with s462 borads, which this system does not have.

naw im sure u could get something to work. cpu's can take alot more heat than most people think. be sure to undervolt and if u gotta underclock a little to. so u just have the little mounting bracket right? could u just get like a xp 90 or xp120 and undervolt, possible a 5 or 7 volted fan that was silent.

oh, wait. the XP 90 and 120 are not socket 462 compatible, and require motherboard mounting holes, which he says that he does not have.

WOW! A 3200 on passive cooling? How is that gonna work? I wouldn't do it, instead, just get a small and quiet 40mm fan and put it on your heatsink. That would be much better than nothing at all. Are there any more fans in the case?

Looks like passive is out of the question. Dang. Thanks for finding that SI-97 A cooler. I was looking at the SP-97 but realized the dumb thing needed mounting holes in the mobo. Any opinions on the Swiftech MCX462-V -VS- Thermalright SI-97A? I know I'll have to use a fan - I've got a quiet 92mm lined up and ready. They probably do about the same job when mounted with the same fan, right? I do have a slow, quiet 120mm fan for intake and same for exhaust (powersupply).

Since your building an HTPC I would suggest a Thermalright SI-97 with either a Nexus fan or an undervolted Panaflo L1B.

there really is no actual working Passive coolers, Fanless HSFs rely on the cases airflow to cool, if there was no airflow the heat would just build and build till it finally overheat, the bigger the heatsink the longer it would take to overheat but it would still overheat eventually. I think alot of people are mislead by the claims of Passive coolers.

undervolting fans really is the best idea...

a 120mm fan at 7 volts is pretty quiet.

I have 4 case fans at 7 volts in my machine and even the harddrive clicking is louder.

40mm fan? which idiot said that!

the bigger the fan the more you can undervolt for equivalent airflow. get a 120mm nexus fan - the quietest around.
