Ok so I have the pc in my sig, but my brother has asked me to build him a computer so with that in mind, he doesnt want to spend too much, but i could sell him some of my older parts and put myself a better rig or upgrade it a bit, what should i be looking at, maybe better graphics card? I have a sellers account so my money gets a fair bit further than usual,

my rig,
e6750 (TRUE)
4 gig of 800 ram, (maybe i get 1333)
ip35 Pro
8800GTX
2sata dvd burners
2x seagate 500 gigers (os+os stuff like music)
2x seagate 750 gigers (Storage plus back up of storage)
WD external 1TB for extra backup of storage:p)
Corsair PSU 650 (i think) its modular.

IDeas on what to do guys, for example should i look at a quad and better gfx card or...? I have a 22inch monitor btw and vista x64

What games do you and your brother play?
What resolution will you both use?
 
um, well like i said, he wants to do it on the cheap, but under a grand (aus dollars) would be great, but like i also said, my money goes further than most on pc hardware so... im at 1680x1050 with my 22, and my bro is on a 17" lcd, so 1280 i guess, but he wont be using it for gaming as a main purpose, the reason i ask is so to know weather to give him my 8800gtx and e6750 and/or other parts on the cheap and use it as an oppertunity to upgrade myself....
 
It helps to answer the questions.
What games do you intend to play?

An 8800GTX will be fine with at 1280 res for just about any game but is your brothers CPU fast enough to drive it? How much memory does he have?
What speed are you running your CPU and do you intend on overclocking?
 
lol, ok, i do appreciate your help but i dont think i made myself clear, ok, my brothers computer is dying, its my old amdathlonxp system, he needs a completely new build, I am going to do this for him, however, i am happy to give him some of my old componants cheap, mixed with some new parts that i buy so he gets a system and i will order some new parts for me too, if there is any bennifit in doing so,

I play heaps of games, from starcraft through to css, tf2, GRID, Stalker, wanting to play farcry2, and some game sof the future, starcraft2, diablo3, i play heaps of diff games... some mor edemanding than others,

an example of what i would do would be, order an q6600 and use my current e6750 in his system i build.
 
Yeah that'd be great for you and him.
He is likely to need your PSU as well, the 8800GTX isnt for whimpy PSU's.

If you are set on a q6600, I wont put you off as long as you intend on clocking it to 3.2 to 3.6GHz to get good graphics card performance.
Cheaper options are are the E7200 and E8400 to put you somewhere near 4GHz which gets to the upper limit of most modern gfx cards.

As for which gfx card, that can be a tough one.
For no compromise, the GTX280 or 4870x2 are what you want but you will need a strong PSU for the x2 cards. There are a few driver issues on the ATI card.
Below that are the GTX260 and 4870 if money is tight.
The GTX260 has just had a refresh and the newer versions with 216SP's (stream processors) are a good buy if the price is right.
I'm a bit wary of recommending the 4870 due to many complaints about driver issues.
Also lack of PhysX support might be an issue, which can be used now and is looking to become more mainstream soon.
Note the above are considerations not reasons to ignore ATI's card, just so you are wise.
 
yer, i probably dont want to go to an x2 or a 280 (maybe ill ahve to check my price) as im sure ill buy a 280 and something better will come along soon enough, mainly 260 vs 4870, i have ALWAYS been a Nv gfx man, and buyer, but i thought ATI had come back with these releases, I am not set on a quad, I just thought they have good bennift atm? feel free to educate me otherwise, I am more than happy to overclock, and i have a true so i mean, i can cool the overclock...

wow, I did not know/think that! Sow hat then, i ge tthe 260 or 4870, and do i upgrade to a quad?
 
If you want, sure, get it. The E6750 could probably clock higher than the Q6600, though. The quad will last longer as newer apps are more multi-threaded. The E6750 OC'd to 3.8Ghz will give you better performance with current non-multi-core-optimized apps/games.
