Need new psu, looking for suggestions

Well, with my comp being broken, and prime suspect being the psu, it's time to buy a new one, however I'm thinking of the future and the new comp I'm going to be having in about 3 months.

I want a psu that's capable of running nvidias in sli. The projected system is going to be

Raptor 74gig
1-2 ide hard drives (200gigs ish each)
2 optical drives
1 gig corsair XL
socket 939 comp (maybe 3500+? not sure exactly what here yet)
maybe dual nvidias in sli (at the bare minimum it will be an ati 9800 pro)
With a few ccfls.

Will like a fortron 550 be enough, or am I looking at dual power supplies? like a pair of 400s? And how do you go about mounting the second psu?

And besides fortron, is there anything else I should consider (besides PC P&C)? Looking for the best psu for the dollar, although being able to get rid of the ugly grey would be nice.
 
if you don't want pcp&c (my reccomendation) go fortron 530. IT will handle your rig easily.
 
Some cases will support dual PSUs, some don't. My cooler master does I think.

Anyways, the Fortron would be more than enough for your system. I use an Antec TruePower myself (a 430 watt).

If not, then will the pc power and cooling be?
 
pc power and cooling 110% sure, Fortron 99% sure. Rumor has it some pcp&c are fortron (the higher end ones are zippy though, like mine :cool: )
 
hrmm.. I SORT OF have the money to buy the pc power and cooling. This is if the psu is broken. if it's NOT the psu, I'm screwed :)

Is anything going to be changing for power supply/form factor anytime soon that is going to screw me if I buy a pc p and c?
 
Intel says btx won't be common until 2007, and with amd's resistance, there is some doubt about it, so I'd say your good to go. Lemme tell you, once you buy it, you will NEVER go back. I sold off 1GB mushkin bh-5 and went months without my rig operational to get it and IT IS 100% WORTH IT :) My machine can't even make the rails budge. Literally, staring at the multimeter while the computers priming makes you think the multimeter locked up. The voltages just dont move.

Here's my logical voice:

You should realize though, that there is a very, very good chance the Fortron will run dual nvidias just fine. I'd say near 100%. But you wouldn't get the warranty, support, ultimate power, or fit and finish that pcp&c gives you. And you won't get the 38 amps peak on the 12v line that pcp&c has. :eek:

If you can really afford it, go pcp&c and you won't be dissapointed. IF not, go fortron.


Here's my illogical voice:

whisper: kill whoever you need to, steal anything you need to, and do everything you can to get that pcp&c 510 deluxe.....


lol :) Whichever one you pick will make you happy, I can tell you that having used both.
 
but nothing stupid is going to happen like a new motherboard connector or something??
 
The new Intel LGA775 boards have a 24-pin motherboard connector I believe, whereas almost every ATX PSU only hasa 20-pin mobo connector. However, there's a 20->24 pin converter anyways.

So no, you're not gonna get F'ed if you buy the PC P&C for current computers.

edit: I've been out of the loop in terms of socket 939 boards. If you're going with dual Nvidias in SLI, doesn't that require a PCI Express motherboard? Are any of the socket 939 boards PCI express right now?

you can even tell the guys at pcp&c to put the 24 pin connector on there stock if you want. I think you will get a free adapter to convert it to normal too.
 
bill, yes you are right. The plan is to build half the comp now (motherboard/proc/ram/case/psu), and recycle old parts (hd, graphics, optical) until I get some more money.

hehe I do the same thing. I got one of the old ibm 75gxp's in my rig now lol right next to my coolermaster atc101-b and 4ghz intel lol. I also have a el-cheapo 5.1 diamond soundcard that i just abandoned for onboard. I have a floppy from a pentium pro compaq system. My dvd-rom drive was $130 when I bought it years ago; its an 8x toshiba.

My pc is quite an excersise in budget management, compromises, and quite an odd conglomeration of parts :D
 
Get the Deluxe AG, it comes standard with 24-pin main and 8-pin aux. You don't need adapters as long as you have space around the sockets to have the extra pins hanging off.
 
PCP&C, i'm not sure if the "AG" version uses the EPS12V connector, but i believe that is the most "future proof" way to go.

as computerpro3 said, you can't really beat the 38amps on the 12v rail.

if you're not sure it's the PSU, what have you narrowed it down to? when a PSU dies, it is likely that it will kill other components as well.
 
felix, well i have a post in general hardware. But the comp was burning, and I isolated the burning smell to the psu (proc temp was fine). The motherboard started making a LOUD whirring noise (the motherboard itself, not a fan, as I have no fans in system). Took psu out, jumped it, and it's running fine. Cool to the touch, no sounds or smells. I also noted that psu voltages were quite a bit off (though within tolerance), .5 off on the 12v rail. What I'm thinking is that I had my computer get hit by lightning a few weeks ago, took out network card (and only the network card, which is sort of lol). Replaced it and it ran fine. However I think the psu got screwed up and started running quite a bit out of voltage spec (and I didn't notice because I don't monitor those), and eventually just fried the motherboard.
