I need a new inkjet printer for under £150. I need it for printing pictures are decent quality and maybe some photos.

Anyone know what a good printer is for what im looking for?

usually HP's are what i recommend. i'd say find a cheap HP photosmart. sorry i can't recommend which exact model, but do a little searching. if you don't like HP, then i'd say go w/canon. they usually make good photo printers.

HP and Epson are head and shoulders above the rest. Both companies have some cheaper priced models that print very well. If no one wants to believe me, pick up some "semi-gloss" photopaper. I've seen a few brands give a warning label that HP's and Epsons can use it, but Lexmark and Canon need higher quality paper to compensate.

I've always used Epson printers, ever since my (still working) LQ-510 dot matrix. I have a Stylus now, works great. I like the 4-cartridge system, only repace the color you need.

i wish all printers had that option. i'm sure it's much less costly in the long run. no reason to throw away all that blue/yellow if all you use is red.

go with a canon- the print quality is superb. Ive got an s750 here at uni, dads got a i950 at home- ok you need decent paper but the ink tanks are cheap and use 4 individual ones. Theyre about £6.50 each so theyre not gonna break the bank. The quality on my s750 is really good and its pretty quick. Photo quality prints on glossy paper are nearly indistinguishable from real photos :)
I much prefer it to sinilar models from HP and epson.
just my $0.02 :)

I am nothing but happy with my Epson CX5200, you should look into these the print/scan quality is very nice.

ink is cheap too. there is a site selling it for 3.45 each cartridge (cant remember the name right now, ebay has cheap ink too)

I've owned at least four HP Inkjets since they originally came out, and overall quality has dropped significantly over time as the prices have dropped.

I would strongly recommend against buying an HP if you want to do any sort of volume of printing.

HP's cartridges are an astounding rip-off, worse than any other company. A 25mL black ink cartridge for my PSC model is roughly $30 in retail. That's how they make their money.

If you insist on HP's, buy two or three cartridges and continuously refill them (with a refill kit).

Otherwise, if you plan to do a lot of printing, buy a Canon.

I am in no way disagreeing that our ink is expensive, but it does last a lot longer per mL. I also don't agree with your statements that they are getting worse. I've had the chance to use them at various jobs for the past 7 years, and have been very happy with the print quality. My cousin does commericial art design and has only used HP printers during her career. There are countless articles in her trade magazines that always give HP the highest quality. I know it sounds biased, as I work for HP, but I am not in the consumer products division, so I gain nothing from our sales. I also believe in being honest, which is why I also can recommend our chief inkjet competitor, Epson. I could only recommend Epson and HP though, because Canon and Lexmark fail miserably when tested agsint those 2 brands.

We recently bought a HP deskjet 3650 for someone we made a computer for. Ran pretty nice and made some decent photos too.

We have a HP photosmart 7660 but i havent tried it yet since i'm waiting for a larger table so i can have everything set up nicely. Supposed to a good photo printer.

I've heard that HP have some problems with generic cartridges though

Unfortunately, regardless of how "long it lasts per mil", HP printers cost more to print per page by far. This is the only thing that matters in terms of long-term cost- how many pages at what cost per page.

This is because HP still stupidly insists on using disposable heads integrated into the cartridges, long after permanent heads have gotten rid of any issues they had a decade ago.

In addition, Canon printers tend to print very quickly at a given level of quality relative to HP.

I think you'd better do a "retest" if you're making statements like this. I've used a wide variety of Canon, Epson and Lexmark printers in addition to many HP's, and the worst were definitely the Lexmarks. The Canons have always been very decent, and these days are downright excellent, especially WRT color.

Instead of listening to company employees and internet strangers relentlessly proselytize about their products, why don't we let people Compare for themselves?

Then they can pick up an HP if they feel the tremendous cost is worth it.

You're saying she's using inkjets commercially?
That's absurd.

I was not talking about print quality, I was talking about build quality and design. The old Deskjet 500's were rock-solid (and they needed it, because you'd be kicking them occassionally), the newer designs aren't even close.

I would be more inclined to say generic cartridges are THE problem. Refill kits, generic ink, and remanufactured cartriges are a quick way to ruin any printer regardless of manufacture. Just remember, you DO get what you pay for. If you buy the $49.99 special don't expect the super best quality and want it to last for a million pages. It just ain't gonna happen.

I detest Epsons. I replaced 3 of mine and numerous others for customers. Clogged heads, head cleaning nuisance and the new cartridges are electronically "chipped", they are "empty" whether or not the cartridge is really empty or not.

I like the Canons, both because of print quality and ink cost. HPs have always been good to me. I have a 952 and a 932 and both have gone through numerous refills (black only) without a hitch for years. No experience on later model HPs, because I have not needed to purchase newer ones.

Did I say WHAT she did commercially...no not at all.

When you assume, you make an ass out of yourself.

She doesn't do magazine prints. They do various outputs, and some is done with an inkjet, and some is not.
