im having stability issues when streaming videos and watching youtube.
Ive been unable to diagnose the exact problem so hoping to to just get lucky replacing hardware

What new motherboards would be compatible with all this other hardware?

or I suppose ram would be logical cheapest first place to start?
then gpu/video card?
then a new AM3+ motherboard that would be compatible with present cpu/ 920 liquid kuhler, video card, psu etc?

Hers my hardware list
2 x 4 gig sticks Corsair Vengeance ram
Ga 990xa-UD3 am3+ mobo
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor × 4

Replacing random hardware to fix stability issues is the dumbest thing ever. You should just buy a Bic lighter and start burning $100 bills.

What kind of stability issues are you talking about? Computer locking up? Computer rebooting? BSOD? Stuttering/slow response? Sluggish feel? What exactly?

What operating system are you running? Is it fully updated? If not, then what updates do you have? (SP1, SP2, etc..)

Do any of these videos have anything in common such as resolution or length? Only YouTube videos or any video you stream?

i realise i am probly gonna wwaste some money but ive tried alot of things to no avail.

i use ubuntu 16 lts fully updated weekly
ive had one bsod in the last year
ive added extra fans and sealed up any holes for better airflow.
ive bought a temp gun and noticed some temps on back of gpu or chipset or vrms that were mid to high 50s celcius[cpu temps in bios are generally under 40 c]
liquid kuhler 920 never seems to get even warm and fans are just idling along.
since adding more fans, temps are all about mid forties but still get crashes

mostly fire fox that crashes, sometimes twice in same minute
ive tried turning off hardware acceleration
changed from generic video drivers to proprietary amd drivers
occasionally qupzilla or firefox locks up, mostly when i have over a dozen windows open
but mostly firefox just crashes when streaming videos from primewire.ag and youtube videos and i cant imagine theres a common resolution that does it, not that i noticed anyways

ive refreshed firefox which elimiantes all extensions and still got crashes
now i only have tineye, googlle rev search and adblock plus for ext

currently memtesting for 80 plus minutes with zero errors so far

also i am running ubuntu on a laptop and have never crashed on any youtube or primewire stream so im thinking that means its very likely a hardware problem cauing the crashes on my desktop

ok maybe i found the problem
it ran memtest flawlessy for 90 minutes first time completing one full pass error free
is that enough time/runs in the first place?

so i stopped the run and i think i chose a different mode, not entirely sure as you get only 5 secs to choose before it starts automatically

the 2 nd run was an SMP test which i guess is multithread or cpu testing? and it ran flawlessly until about 87 min mark then bam 16 errors

so is this definitely a ram problem?
do i remove one stick and run the other stick by itslef then the other stick by itself so i can determine the exact buggy stick and maybe just maybe find another identical stick to pair up with the good one?

ok i ran a smp/multithread for;
9 passes or 10 plus hrs on one stick with zero errors
and one complete pass on the other stick with zero errors

i even accidently blocked the main 6 inch intake fan from running and interior temps went up 6 degrees c for first hour and it didnt cause any errors
going to keep running both sticks seperately in different slots then back together again and see what happens

It could be the DIMM slot itself as well so make sure you test the RAM in all of the slots your RAM populates when fully populated.

I would run memtest again with all sticks just to make sure that it's indeed failing though.

Ubuntu (well any Linux for that matter) generally does an excellent job of logging everything that goes on. So I would start looking around at logs around the time you have these crashes to see if anything turns up. From system event logs to the individual program logs. If they're not logging then turn logging on.

other stick failed massively after 90 minutes with 137 errors in that same slot the first stick went 10 plus hours
guess i will just use the other 4 gb stick for now and see if thats enough ram to run things properly and stable like.
if not then go shopping for a sister stick or 2 new sticks

not sure where to find these event logs in ubuntu?

now a new wrinkle has arose
i came home to a failed powerbar that was not putting out any power and had a high pitched whistle

i have been running either monster power or apc powerbars forever and recently[5 yrs ago] even went to using a surge protected ups as a second layer of protection after a storm fried a previous motherboard in an older house.

is this a coincidence or cause of my problems?

You can find logs in the /var/log directory.

theres hundreds of files in the log directory, i have no idea what to look for

it may be inconsequetial anyway as i have zero crashes in last 2.5 days and i normally would have at least 1/2 dozen in that time sometimes that many in an hour
so its looking like i dont need any new parts as my system seems to be working just fine on single stick of 4 gb ram

There should be a log in there called "syslog".

ok i found 7 syslogs one for each of last 7 days.
what ami looking for in there?

update, i did have one crash since removing the one stick of ram and failed powerbar

The recent release of the GTX 980 Ti 6GB changes this a bit. I don't want to edit the article directly, but anyone reading this can consider the 980 Ti a viable option in place of the Titan X in the recommendations above. It has performance nearing the Titan X in games, but with half the video memory... but that is still a solid amount for 4K gaming currently.
