Need modular power supply recommendation

I currently have a Corsair 850w psu which is overkill for my needs, and the cables are a total mess inside the case. I am pretty sure this psu is designed for folks with lots more drives and sli in full tower cases.

I don't plan to run crossfire or sli in the future. Specs in sig. I do plan to overclock my core i7 920 up to 3.8 ghz in the future. Requesting some modular power supply recommendations. Again, I am hoping to massively improve the cable management situation inside the case.

How big is your case? Which case do you have? Would going to a SFX PSU be appropriate?

As an alternative, how about tidying the surplus cables away into the 5.25" bays? Or into the space behind the motherboard?

Sorry guys, I didn't realize the case was not in sig. Just added this info, NZXT Phantom 410 mid-tower.

Also, I should add that it should not be a loud psu. It doesn't need to be totally silent, just a average noise level would work just fine.

I was thinking 600-650w to be conservative without going overboard. Am guessing this is more than enough for today's system and would allow for a reasonable amount of future expansion. As I said, I won't do sli or crossfire. But overclocking the core i7 920 would use lots more power I am sure. And, it is possible that I would upgrade to a Nvidia gtx 770 before the end of the year, which uses lots more power than a Radeon 7870.

Any suggested products from ncix.com (us version)? I have a $20 gift card from there.

Any brands to seek out or avoid? I have had good experiences with psu's from Antec, Corsair, and Zalman in the past.

If you don't mind buying from Newegg and forgo the $20 GC, I would recommend Seasonic Platinum* 660w Full Modular. It's plenty enough for your system even with CPU OC'd and an upgraded GPU later on. It goes on sale once in a while for $90 after rebate.

Seasonic SS-660XP2 - [H] Review.

*Don't buy too much in to the Platinum Plus label. Plus certification only kicks in when you use at a minimum 20% power draw. That pretty much means only when you game or do multimedia tasks. You can see it in the [H] review under power consumption.

Either the newer Corsair AX series the ones ending in 60watts, or the Seasonic ones if color scheme is not a factor. Most of the Corsair PSU's are just rebranded Seasonics. I went with the Corsair myself to match with my black and read theme.

It sounds like Seasonic is #1 for power supplies. Any other Seasonic models in the 600w worthy of consideration? Again, needs to be at least partially modular.

Are you looking for value or high quality? What is your budget? Are you looking to spend the entirety of said budget, or are you looking to save as much as possible? Recommendations vary depending on your answer to these questions.

Something slightly above middle of the road.
1. budget/cheap
2. average
3. above average ==> This is what I am shooting for.
4. premium/elite

What are the estimated costs for each of these categories? At this point I've been able to narrow it down to 600-650w capacity.

Educated guessing, retail (normal) pricing:

1. ~$40-50 <--- you want to avoid most power supplies in this range, unless it's a higher tier on sale.
2. $60-70
3. $75-100
4. $110-140

Thanks for all the feedback. I purchased the 550w Seasonic G series. My goal is to get the case insides looking good enough to post pictures on the "post pictures of your rig" thread. This will greatly help improve the cable management.

I purchased the same PSU recently. I had some trouble with it as the video card wouldnt power up from the included 6+2 cables from the GPU port on the PSU. but did fine with antec PCIe cables plugged into the hard drive ports.

really strange, but I still stand by Seasonic

Is buying from Newegg evil these days? I haven't really been keeping track.

Newegg is just fine, that's where I got the new NZXT case. It's just that I had a $20 gift card from NCIX that I wanted to use.

Yes pretty much.

No. Just...no. Newegg screwed this forum over and their customer service leaves alot to be desired. They basically said F U to the people who made them what they are today. Newegg can suck a dick, havent bought anything from them in years.

Although I have to agree newegg put the screws to HardForum users recently, I have not a single bad thing to say about them.

I continue to buy products there, a lot of products.

I can get delivery on most items the next day, I don't pat tax, and their
customer support has been fine. I do look at Amazon and TigerDirect but quite honestly the new egg prices are generally better.

Now, as far as power supplies are concerned, I think the one thing you should consider is customer service. Corsair has hands down the best CS anywhere. I recently had an AX 850 PSU go south after about 1 year. All I had to do was file an RMA online and it was approved in less than 5 minutes. Corsair cross shipped me a new AX 860 the same day. I could go on, but I always look to buy anything Corsair first if they sell what I'm looking for.

Is it mostly motherboards where newegg has been treating Hardforum users poorly? I've bought tons of stuff from them over the years: cpus, power supplies, motherboards, cases, gpus. Never had to do an RMA so I can't comment on their customer service. There is a thread in the motherboards forum suggesting bad behavior on their part (although it wasn't clear to me whether it was newegg or the buyer who messed up).

Again, I assume compalints about newegg customer service is mostly for motherboards, correct? Are they ok for power supplies?

It's not neweggs products that are bad.
Think about it, newegg is just a store.
The beef everybody has with newegg is their click-through reimbursement.

NE used to be a huge sponsor of the forum and of HardOCP, but all of a sudden they decided to stop giving payout to all the clickthrough from here, because we are return customers, not new customers.
NE decided they already had us in the bag and so didn't need to reward Hard for all their member's shopping through links to Hard.

Thus you see the NewZon or Hoverhound tool.
Thus you hear the grumblings from forum members.

I dont agree with what newegg did, obviously we as hardcore builders and modders are going to spend money, and some of that should come back here.

It's not necessarily stopping me from shopping there, but I do shop around more nowdays.
