Recently, I ramped up folding with the addition of 3 x 460's to go along with my old pair of 8800GT's. Add in a few C2D's and suddenly I'm hovering around 50k PPD. Throwing points / watt to the wind, I dug an old 2P socket 603 board out of my parts bin and started contemplating making it fold for the [H]orde. As this is rather archaic, I'm having a tough time finding numbers or guesses as to potential PPD. Does anyone have a guess as to what I might see if I drop a couple of these SL79V chips in there? Is it more work than it's worth? I'd likely get them from fleabay (for next to nothing, mind you) but that's always a hassle. Any input would be much appreciated!

unfortunately you'd only be looking at maybe 2000 ppd. Unless your power is free I would stay away. You'd be better off buying a $99 sandy bridge cpu with a free motherboard from Microcenter if that option is available

Thanks for the quick response, jebo_4jc! If I can find a combo deal on the two processors and a solar panel, I'll consider it. For now, I'll look elsewhere.

Hell yeah, go solar, then you would now be dealing with relatively fixed costs versus relatively variable costs.

Someday soon, that's for sure. But, for now, the utility companies will continue to get my money. :(

I was folding on a similar set of hardware for a while - dual 2.8ghz xeons with hyperthreading, 2gb of ram. Didn't watch it too closely, but I think it pulled about 1500 ppd. Otoh, there were some smp units it just wouldn't finish - I ran into trouble with the 6701s, and never really figured out why, it would drop the unit part way through with no error and just d/l a new one.

Thanks for the first hand experience! Seems like a Sandy/Ivybridge is the next logical step. GPU folding uses enough power. Shutting down the C2D's and switching to a 2600k seems like money better spent than reviving dead hardware.

I went from a C2Q to a 2500k and the improvement was great. So Going from a C2D to a 2600k should be even more stellar.
