Okay, here is the problem:

After anywhere from 20 minute to 6+ hours of having my system up and running from a reboot, I lose the ability to browse the internet. (IE, Firefox, Opera all do not work. Just get the cannot find page error.)

Even, after I lose internet browsing, if I have a large download running in the background it still works. (Whether through an IE download, or a Torrent, the download will still be going.)

If I reboot my computer, then it works again for at least another 20 mintues, before I lose internet browsing.

It is NOT a hardware issue. I know this because:

1. The problem first started showing itself on my old computer. (Asus A8N32-SLI mobo with an Operton 170, and 2GB G.Skill RAM running Windows XP 32bit.) Now, the same problem is happening on my new build. (Evga 780i mobo with Q6600 and 4GB Mushkin DDR2 800, running Windows XP x64.)

2. On both builds I tried both Network Ports. Enable one, and disable the other. (So, in essence I have tried 4 different network controllers.)

3. I have tried 4 different Ethernet cables. (3 CAT5e and 1 CAT6)

4. I have tried going straight to the Cable Modem. Tried through my 100T Router, and my 1000T switch.

5. The problem has never happened on my other two computers running off the same network. (My Opteron 146 build, and my Pentium 4 3.0GHz build.)

6. And, the strangest kicker of them all: After I lose browsing, I can open my Virtual PC install of Windows XP Pro x32 (My install I use for work.) The internet browser still works in the Virtual PC, but not the Physical PC!

And, yes I have run AntiVirus, Anti-Root Kit, Anti-AdAware, anti-Spyware,etc, and my system is clean.

Refreshing my IP (ipconfig /release + ipconfig /renew), or Repairing my connection does not help.

I belive the problem must lay somewhere inside of the OS. Hence, why I am posting here.

Any solutions to this, would be a huge help!

I use the EvID tool to increase the number of half open connections that XP can use at any one time.
Downloading torrents etc makes heavy use of the half open connections and often there arent any left to allow a whole web page to load and sometimes it is as if you have no internet except for current downloads.

I had the same issue.
Now that I built my new computer, I'm running 64bit vista with no issues.

Vista doesnt have the preset limit that XP32 and XP64 have.
Windows Server 2003 SP1 doesnt have the limit set either.

Is your cable modem losing sync intermittently? Have you checked your modem logs?

When it happens go ahead and run an ipconfig /all

Obviously this would kill all connectivity, but it will demonstrate why to run that command to see what's going on.....

My notebook, after sleep- or even at a cold boot- no internet. I can repair it all day long- no internet. Just local connectivity.
ipconfig showed the default gateway as 0.0.0.0, and my true gateway right below that (how you even set two gateways manually... no idea, but obviously Vista did it by itself).

It'd look like...

Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
192.168.1.1

Turns out my wireless card has a sleep function I had to disable. I know this has nothing to do with yours- but check out your ipconfig output.

Sounds almost to me like DNS is jacked up... Torrents (which are IPs) don't use it and is why it still works. Of course it doesn't explain the Virtual PC.

Like someone already suggested- try disabling IPv6 as well... Can't hurt.
Also when you try the ipconfig command, try pinging a domain (yahoo or whatever). Then do an nslookup (does it resolve), then try pinging the IP address.
