I need ideas for a contest.

I have a 8800GS that I could sell for a few bucks, or with your help could give away to the winner of a contest.

I'd like to the the contest for new or up and coming folders, something like under 5 mill or something.

The rub is I can't think of a fun and exiting contest for people to participate in. So if you fall into that category tell me what would get you exited, and possibly increese your production to win the card.

On the new work units the card pushes 4k ppd. Not a small number for our average folder.

Post away, I want your ideas!

I currently have a BFG Tech 8600GTS that I can't use due to the double slot cards I'm using on my p6t deluxe...If someone comes up with a good idea, I will donate it to the cause as well :)

how about this:
the folder that recruits more new people (in a period of time, say one week) to the cause (for team 33 of course ;)) wins?

the new folders must fold for at least one month

in the other handyou can always make a raffle :D

I'd like to stay away from a raffel. I want something more interactive like the recruiting idea.

I'm all for the interactive recruiting idea. Perhaps a thread is started where the people you recruit have to post saying they were referred by you and then stay folding for at least 30 days or something. Another idea would be for the largest monthly increase in ppd (that is of course sustained). Thus, we could bring back the age-old tradition of call outs, and in the end there could actually be a reward if the call out participants boots their ppd enough.

What about a CC style even where we have a thread and people "register" and then starting on x day...there is a race to x points.

Well..... The person that would win this would probably not see a 8800GS as that big of a prize. Because to win, they would need a good amount of horse power. I could also see many new people getting discouraged.

why not do a points race? say first person to increase their score by 100k points with an avg PPD below 10k points also their total points has to be less then 300k or something low like that.. and their avg can not go more then 100 PPD above the set limit..

or even do it backwards.. last person to 100k point gain wins but they must keep their avg PPD constant.. it cant drop more then 100 PPD lower then their avg over a week..

A slo-mo race. like Sirmonkey says

people must make 3000 PPD or less,
people must post their badge to enter,
first 30 to badge up get selected.
They race to earn 50,000 (at 2500 PPD, that is 20 days)
person with the most consistent (ie final PPD closest matches starting ppd wins)

This shows at least they have some pre-requisite dedication.

It also puts a 3-4 KPPD card in the hands of someone who really needs it. People who have 3 GTX260s, like me will not be as highly motivated nor would they see the same benefit as someone who stands to double their output.

If we formalize this kind of challenge, I might even have a 8800GS of my own to toss up here in the next few months.

hmm... I hate to lose the points, but I have a 9600 I would throw in if we could get someone to donate a mobo that could do 3 cards, it would be like a starter folding kit lol

just read the other thread, maybe sreading it out over a few months would help, that way we could drage people into the team for longer...
If thats the case, I'd donate one to the cause

wooo, 33!

I dont think a contest should have more than one prize.

I mean 5 contest would be better than one contest that has a huge prize pack IMO.

that was what I had in mind.

something like a bi-monthly give away.

Think of the power that should be showing up in the next year. As GT200 cored cards get CHEAP. if a lot of our dedicated farmers start replacing 9800 cards with GTX260s because they can double their cards output for under $100, thats a crapload of 9xxx and 8xxx cards that could be just given away.

or even replacing GTX260s with 300 series... That might free up a card or two from my stable.

The slow-mo race IMO is kinda pointless. Why would you want to hold points back from yourself, and what does consistant ppd have to do with anything? I think a flat-out race to a certain ppd or points would be better, especially for the lower ppd/points people like me. The chance at winning a card that can almost double our ppd output gives us some incentive to increase out own ppd and points. No one needs to switch teams or anything, just a race to a finish. Ideally, the winner has already upped their own ppd and can't make use of an extra 3-4k ppd, or doesn't have an extra system to put the card in. In this case, the 2nd place folder gets it, and so forth until the card is given to someone who can truly use it.

yea, monthly vs one big prize sounds much better

edit
OK, what about just a normal competition between lower end guys, but its not about winning per say as much as it is about who deserves it. Maybe it can be a poll or what not. Fold your ass off for two weeks and stay active in the forums, and then we vote on it (kinda like DCotM). First place doesnt have to get it, but mnaybe someone who we feel is 2nd should get it. If we got enough hardware in a pot we could do this for a little bit and hopefully snag a few more people

How about whoever can post a screenie of a palindrome with 6 digits or less. Palindrome is a number that can be read backwards same as forwards. It rewards people who watch their points and its easier at smaller point values.

To actually achieve the exact points count necessary for that could be very difficult or even impossible to control.

I like flogge's idea. Or some sort of internet scavenger hunt, first one to find everything (with URL proof). And saving the best for last, tamale cookoff.

I'm below 5 million, do I count as an up and coming folder? :D

Ding ding ding... tamale cookoff, got that one covered:p

I'm way below 5mil... but methinks that anyone with a [H]ard|DC'er title, by default, should be disqualified.. but I assume that goes without saying, based on the principal here:)

Ya, production races have been done many times. Just trying to mix it up a bit. You could also allow WU counts to make the required figure to make it happen a little faster.

I think the person should have less than 750k points

It should go to someone that'll use it for folding ofc. Maybe have someone post why/how they're gonna use it for D and then people vote on who gets it? The person getting it will have to have a PC to put it in ofc.

Besides, for contests I'd rather go by PPD than pure point total. Someone with 5mil points trickling in at 2k PPD deserves a GPU in my book. :D

But someone with 2k PPD and is at or near 5 million is far from new or up and coming, which is who Kendrak is looking for with this. Assuming you started out at that 2k PPD, that's over 7 years of crunching, and who is at the same PPD that they were at when they started? Hey, I paid $130 for this calculator for one class, I need an excuse to break it out every now and then. :D

But either way, I for one am ready to judge some tamales.

There are two contests that seem legit:

1) Recruiting - able to get the most new (or inactive) folders going and keep them folding for a month.

2) PPD ramp for Average Folders (the trick is to get the metrics right)

It seems as though we've all agreed on these two options. Now how and when do we implement them? I say that we start after the GT300s are released or around New Years time. That way anyone who got some GPU presents can add that to their boxen (hopefully not screwing the "average folders" competition) and people can recruit based on new GPU purchases. Plus it gives us some time to plan out who's donating what prize and maybe some more contest ideas.

new year sounds like an interesting way to market it. Starting folding could be a new years resolution :p

Well I have a 8800GS that I want to give away now.
I want to start the contest in less than a week. Possibly on Friday.

Haha, okay speed demon. But we (or you since it's your card) need to find the specifics of the contest. Got any ideas, Sir Kendrak?

Well, that was the point of this thread....... :D

Here is what I want to do, tell me if there is something I'm not seeing and needs fixed.

Contest for anyone under 5 million points and under 10k ppd.

Whoever recruits the most new folders wins the 8800GS. A new folder must have a ppd average of 500ppd (figured this would be a C2D running 2 standard clients.)

Contest will last for 1 month.

New members must respond in the contest thread with their folding name and the person who recruited them.

female folders count as double ;)

K... I don't like this one. Maybe it's just me, but I'm way under 5 million, way under 10kppd... and I don't think I should be eligable based on my production alone.

Now, if I were to recruit a bunch of newbies, then okay... but I really think, for the most part, members who have production similar to mine and have been around, are probably going to stay around... I just think this should be targeted at new members, or those that bring new members to the team...

Just my thoughts... so I guess I'm agreeing with what alan said...

Oh, and then theres the tamale thing... yeah, I'm down for that;)

+1

I have less than 1 million, and right now my PPD is Zero.

But im pretty sure I shouldn't qualify for such events.
Plus i feel like something like this has potential fraud written all over it....just my thoughts:confused:

Well that's why I'm asking.

/sigh

Is there a better way to do a recruiting contest?

No

I just dont think recruiting contest work because the people who would do that are the already well established folders.....who dont need a 8800gs.

I dunno sorry to be downer, but its just how i see it.

Well, I think that "the program" should be open to all recruits to [H], regardless if they are first time folders or if they're just switching from another team. Also, for a recruiting program, there should be no maximum ppd, but rather should be a points race.

In other words, Kendrak lets say you set the start date to this Saturday, 9/12/09. Thus you would say:

This competition starts at 12:00am PST on 9/12/09. Every participant must recruit as many people they can to team 33. This competition will last exactly 30 days. Points will be measured on an individual basis with statistics coming from Stanford's own servers (or whatever other method you have to calculate points). Participants will keep a running total in "the program" thread with recruits also posting both their [H]folding badge and noting the participant they were referred by. Whomever has accrued the most points via recruits at the end of the 30 days will be declared the winner and be eligible for the prize.

I think on top of that, Kendrak and other HDCotM-ers should calculate the points and come up with a unanimous winner, as to prevent any animosity from the participant and any of the recruits. The only downside to a contest like this is that much like F@H favors GPU folders, this contest does as well. For instance, if I recruit 20 people who use the standard client, I would lose to someone who just recruits 5 people running GTX 260s. But hey, can't make everyone happy, can you?

Well that's why I'm asking.

My fear is that recruiting might boil down to pestering and or pissing people off, especially when an offer of material goods may be percieved as "bait"... Now, understand that I know that is not the intention here, as this is a noble cause in my opinion, but it may not seem that way to those that don't really understand the project to beigin with.

Personally, I think the contest should target some of the quiet, lower producing members we have lurking around right now... and dude, I know you remember all the threads calling out the lurkers, right?

Pretty sure you and I both were pretty big lurkers at one time, not all that long ago really.... I think that if we can get some more activity in this forum, more of the call outs and fun shit, it's going to help the team big time. I think we need to find a way to make it more "fun" to be around the forum. Having these contests, and giving out cards to those that get it, those who want to be a part of the project the ability to contribute more would likely encourage them to be a part of the team in a more vocal manner and participate more, which hopefully would lead to a more active forum.... see the train of thought I'm working with here?

Anyhow... I hope this isn't percieved as my saying that it's not "fun" to be here, not at all... I just think that sometimes when the little pups (you know, like me) see the big dogs knocking out 50k ppd, it can be intimidating, and keep them form speaking up... that's all.. I just figure that the more activity we have here in this forum, the better, ya' know?

I really like this idea.

I say we try to expand that.

I definitely agree with much of what D_E is saying. I for one am one of those small guys, barely doing 4k ppd with at the end of the month should be 500k points. It would be nice to target people like me, the lower end of the stick, but how is the question? What constraints can you put? It seems that we have 2 focuses now, new recruitment and sparking new life in our "small guys".
